Re: Air conditioning experiences
I’ve now found that there’s a split in condenser where the copper tube meets the body. Probably where someone has previously twisted the tube whilst undoing/tightening the joint. My question: Can condensers be repaired? It’s such a simple repair if was a normal radiator, but I’ve a feeling this will...

Re: Air conditioning experiences
I sent the blower motor off the Robson & Francis Rewinds in South London and it came back within 3 days! I'd recommend these guys for their unbelievable customer service. They rebuild almost any electric motor! Wired it up and couldn't believe; nothing happened. Tracked it down to the relay - turned...

Re: Why do you drive a 2+2?
A simple reason for me: I had a S3 OTS and for me that was the ultimate e-type: 1) Last of the series, 2) Soft top 3) V12, 4) wider stance with the 70’s flares(wheel arches) 5) and of course; *that* fantail exhaust! Then kids came along and my wife and I never got to go out in it and also got a bit ...

Re: Air conditioning experiences
Many thanks bitsobrits. I’ve always suspected the motor might have been a bit duff. I dropped it out of the evaporator housing and wired it up to the battery direct with a switch and fuse. And yes, the fuse popped within 3 seconds. I’m sending it off to be repaired so will see what they say. Slowly ...

Re: Air conditioning experiences
I’ve been sorting all the electrics out for the AC and got everything running fine although the compressor clutch is seized but I’m getting that rebuilt. However now, the AC fuse keeps popping after about 5 seconds when I switch the AC on. To find the culprit by the process of elimination, I’ve indi...

Re: Air conditioning experiences
I’ve been busy prepping my A/C system for getting a gas recharge and hopefully getting the system working after a long time without. The latest issue was making sure the A/C activating switch operates reliably and I remember having issues with the fan only working on 2 settings so whilst I had the c...

Re: Air conditioning experiences
Hello guys. Back to getting the car back on the road after a very long lay off. Amongst the things I’d like to fix is the AC. The question I have for you is: The original compressor is seized. Given the choice, would you get the compressor serviced with a 2 yr guarantee for £360 inc pick & delivery ...

Re: What is the correct finish for engine bay balance pipes
Wow Craig! You missed nothing! Thank you very much 😁 It does raise a question though as mine is a UK model and the items the article says should be yellow cad plated I’m sure would be the same as the throttle linkage ie. bright cadmium. I only say this as the original finish on mine is definitely no...

What is the correct finish for engine bay balance pipes
Hello chaps. I’m about to refresh the engine bay and am wondering if anyone knows the correct finish for the steel balance pipes running over the top of the engine. I naively thought they were zinc plated but wanted to check whether they are tin plated instead….or anything else for that matter!! Tha...

Re: Servo not working - what tests to find out?
Well, I finally got to the bottom of it! Going through every hose, line and connection, I’ve discovered that the clowns who did some refurbishment work under the bonnet a while ago evidently put the Vacuum Valve back in the wrong direction. Why/how would you do that??? Another item on the li...

Re: Servo not working - what tests to find out?
Yes - All lines seem OK.
However, is there a way of testing the servo independently from the master cylinder to see if it’s up to scratch?
Does the vacuum tank ever suffer from faults and if so, what are the tell-tales signs?
Cheers, Hilton

Servo not working - what tests to find out?
My brakes have been like wood for a while and I have to really stamp down hard to get any good stopping. I’ve done the standard servo test of; before starting the engine, pushing the brake pedal down 8-10 times, hold it down then start the engine to see if it sunk down further but there is no change...

Re: Carbs - heat exchanger gasket question
Thanks for the replies guys. I decided to do the job properly and dialled the compensators in using two bowls of hot/cold water + thermometer and fiddled around until all were reacting identically - actually quite fun. What was apparent was just how random all of them were. From the one using the bl...

Re: Carbs - heat exchanger gasket question
Thanks for the explanation. That’s exactly what I needed to know. I’m sorry for confusing things by describing the Temperature Compensator wrongly - that’s the part I meant. A bit embarrassing!! The ‘original’ gasket didn’t make sense to me as it did appear to be blocking things off, so thanks for e...

Carbs - heat exchanger gasket question
Hello guys. I got a Zenith carb gasket kit from SNGB. All good so far but I’m uncertain about the smaller gasket for the heat exchanger. I’ve attached a photo: The new one (B) looks the right diameter and like it should go inside the carb body but doesn’t reassemble the original one. It’s not as thi...

Re: Sticking Brakes in the hot weather
What a lovely occasion to get the E-type out for! No better car to do it with!! I drove in a modern Mini today and imagined how brave I’d have to be to take the E out in this kind of heat. If you survived today you can pretty much take on anything!! And thanks for the recap on the reaction valve fix...

Re: Air conditioning experiences
Hello guys. I wanted to resurrect this thread after a long time off and dealing with family matters. Hopefully soon I’ll have cured the cashflow problem, get the car back on the road and make it a more reliable, practical runner that I’ll be using more often. So just in advance of this, I want to ad...

Hello guys, As you can tell, I haven't really been on this forum for ages and have missed this thread which I feel I should contribute to. Please excuse my delay - family got in the way!! I've sent Dick a reply to his questions by PM - I just hope he's got it as it doesn't show that my message was s...
