Re: Rear wheel play

Spent some time on it yesterday and put a dial gauge on the hub. The end float was approx 0.1mm which is around 4 thou so within tolerance. I did ‘hit the hub with a rubber hammer as per the manual first. But you can clearly rock the hub side to side and up and down so does this still indicate a bea...

Re: Rear wheel play

Thanks for all the advice so far. At the moment I can confirm that the wheel is firmly fixed to the splines on the hub and that I can feel the play in the hub with the wheel removed. The amount of play is probably 1-2mm on the edges of the wheel and can be felt when rocking left/right and top/bottom...

Re: Rear wheel play

Looking at it there does not seem to be a huge amount of grease inside once I removed the dust cover.

I'll add some and see what happens.

Thanks for the tip...

Re: Rear wheel play

Thanks for the reply. I'll do a bit more checking of the wheel to make sure it's not between the wheel & hub but I'm pretty sure it isn't as the spinner seems tight enough.

Thanks for the pointer to the appropriate manual section, much appreciated.

Rear wheel play

Just going through some routine stuff on my 1969 series 2, 2+2 and noticed that there is some vertical and horizontal play on my nearside rear wheel. Given that it's in all directions, am I correct to assume that it's the outer wheel bearing or could it be something else? If it's the bearing, how di...

Re: Rev counter

Might be worth checking to see if anything else like the radiators fans have also stopped working as they are fed from the same fuse (6 I think). I had mine stop working a couple of years ago and it was a poor fuse connection which I spotted when the fans failed to kick in one time.

Re: WARNING…BE CAREFUL!!

I had a similar issue with an AP clutch from SNG back in 2019. Failed after 30 miles although this was due to the bearing face on the clutch cover where the release bearing presses becoming detached.

Turned out there was a bad batch from AP. So even AP have their issues….

Re: Radiator - re-core or replace

Brian, got mine from whoopee motor factors in Fleet. Church Crookham actually. If you wanted to pop round some time I'll show you where it is? Thanks for the offer Malcolm. I'm going to see how expensive/easy it would be to get it re-cored first as it didn't leak when I first refitted it and now it...

Re: Radiator - re-core or replace

Thanks Malcolm.

I’ll try the Bars Leak route and address the underlying issue if it doesn’t work. It’s for the Weymouth trip next month.

Just trying to find a UK source. Where did you get yours?

Re: Radiator - re-core or replace

Ok, I may try Bars Leaks to see if it will enable me to at least use the car for the upcoming event.

I see that there are quite a number of products out there from Holts etc. Is it best to stick with Bars or are any of the others equally good?

Re: Radiator - re-core or replace

Don't really want to go down the bars route as it had a full engine rebuild only 2 years ago. I might think about taking some pre-mixed fluid with me for the time being but was just worried in case it lets go big time when out. I'll contact the engineering company suggested to get a quote for a rebu...

Radiator - re-core or replace

So it looks like I have a small leak in my radiator in the corner close to the drain cock. It doesn't drop much after a run - maybe a teaspoonful but I imagine it will only get worse. Car is a RHD Series 2 2+2 I've looked on the SNG Barratt site and they are around £800 quid (ally replacement) and a...

Re: Clutch slave cylinder 'aftermarket' or 'standard'

I had my slave cylinder go and replaced it with an aftermarket one and it was fine. However, a year later I had to replace my master cylinder and the aftermarket one was awful and didn’t work properly. The supplier informed me that this was not an unknown issue and I replaced it with the genuine one...

Yes, despite the weather a great day out and a chance for Primrose to stretch her legs a little.

Also showed just how good Rain-X is!

Re: Wiper & washer earth connection

With help from Steve (mgcjag) I have located the earthing point which is a small lug underneath the washer bottle and an earthing spade connector. The lug had sheared off. Not an easy fix as it is bolted to the car body and the nut is behind the side panel on the drivers side which is a bit of a pai...

Wiper & washer earth connection

Hi All, So 200 miles after my engine rebuild etc. we went out on a Jaguar drive out day yesterday and it started raining (first time out in the rain since the rebuild) and... Switched on the wipers to slow and they didn't work, tried fast... same problem. At first I thought fuse but the fuses (6 &7)...

Re: Engine Removal Question

Previous post is correct, you can take off the oil filter without first draining the sump. Best place to break the clutch circuit is to disconnect the feed pipe to the slave cylinder. You need to unbolt the flexible to copper union just above to allow you to move it but that’s just a single bolt on ...

Re: Rebuilt engine starting procedure

Went through the startup procedure and she fired up nicely. Very happy! Got her up to temperature with just a small leak from othe bottom rad hose and another small weep of cool and from around one of the chrome head nuts. Hopefully this will go once I re torque the nuts after she has cooled overnig...

Re: Rebuilt engine starting procedure

Thanks guys. I have put oil in (double checked the levels - twice)! Thanks for the info - good to know that I’m in the right area of what to do. I’ll squirt in some oil and spin her over with the plugs out as suggested before trying for real. Advice on the initial running speed much appreciated. Hop...

Rebuilt engine starting procedure

Getting ready to start my engine for the first time following a full rebuild. At the moment I am thinking of: Disconnecting the coil and power to the fuel pump and spinning the engine over for a while to build up some oil pressure before starting. Is this best done with the plugs in or out? Should I...
