Re: S1 3.8 bonnet mouth shape and dimensions (factory)
I have owned my 1964 Coupe for 48+ years now and can attest that it has not been molested during my ownership. The original 5+ years was one owner, and while I cannot be sure, I was told that the car had not been involved in and accident. If you would like pictures and/or dimensions, contact me via ...

Re: Longest owned ... just a bit fun
I am the second owner of my 1964 FHC. Bought "Grumpy" in April of 1970 as a present to myself for having made it through Vietnam for a year :) So as of now, I have had the car for 47 years. Some day in the not too distant future, it will be a "barn find"....

I measured my '64, 3.8 and got essentially the same numbers. Top of slot is .530" down from gasket surface Bottom of slot is .640" down from gasket surface Slot is therefore .110" wide Bottom of housing is 1.785" from gasket surface Offset for thermostat is .035" deep Inside diameter is 1.980" Offse...

For the sake of accuracy the original nuts were bronze rather than brass IIRC On our aircraft exhaust systems, we use inconel bolts and nuts (austenitic nickel-chromium-based superalloy). That is what I used on the "spare" engine and will be using on the real original engine. More expensive but won...

This past summer,I went through the same quest for the "proper" procedure for the spare engine I was building. Some said soak the seal, others said install it dry, but most credible sources said in any case, you have to use the seal sizing tool. Being the spend thrift and having the awesome opportun...

Here in the States, we have this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Jaguar-E-Type-XKE-/281888343751?forcerrptr=true&hash=item41a1dac6c7:g:C~kAAOSwhkRWcv6I&item=281888343751 The only thing a buyer would get is a bill of sale, the plate, the "Made in England" tag and possibly a fuel tank :( At least he's not tr...

Because of the vagaries already mentioned, I am not a big fan of the stand alone compression test. In addition to doing one, I also use what we call a "leak down test". I am sure a simple google search will turn up multiple hits on this test and the recommended procedure. I do them as a matter of co...

This has happened to me a few times and an internet search for the error message suggests that the problem is on the server end. It happened after the latest automatic Windows update to me. That said, I have done the following with positive results. Update the browser(s); I use Chrome but have IE re...

Simon - Our Resident Chemistry Student
I didn't know quite where to put this, but here goes. A little bird told me: Simon Johnson (SEJohnson95), our 20 year old chemistry student has landed his first job in the pharmaceutical industry. He will be doing a year internship with Roche in Basel, Switzerland. These internships are not easy to ...

Personally, I prefer the glass smooth, deep gloss appearance of today's paint systems, Way back in the 70's, I had a conversation with the guy who was then in charge of the paint systems for General Motors (I retired from there after 33 years). I asked why our cars seemingly had much less "orange pe...
Excellent explanation Simon. Hope your enjoyed the challenge. Now when driving down the road with our Rain-X treated windscreens, we can all think of those tiny "water hating" molecules working hard to get rid of that nasty rain water through the wonders of chemistry. And there folks, is what makes ...
Simon (SEJohnson95) - As one chemist to another, I think a good challenge for you would be to investigate: What is Rain-X? How does it work? Are there pitfalls in the application procedure? Could the product be improved? Hint; think surface tension/ surface energy and "molecular bonding". Richard Gray

I just installed the head on my 3.8 FHC engine. The head and block were slightly "skim" cut (<.010" ea) , new timing chains and had no issues using a .059" Cometic composite head gasket. Spoke with the manufacturer and there is no "this side up" marking or requirement and they recommend factory torq...

That looks to me like what happens when a crankshaft has been submerged arc welded prior to being re-ground for size. That looks like the porosity from either the start of the arc or end of it. or perhaps even not a perfect setup. Wouldn't be surprised if somewhere along the crank's life line, it wa...
