Re: Tacho Not Working

As soon as I get back I'll do a wiring diagram (pre changes) some continuity checks and post some more photos.

Re: Tacho Not Working

Marek,
As I stated in my 1st post, electrics is not a strong point.
Until I started checking the wires and became more familiar with the wiring diagram, following the advice on here I didn't know it wasn't standard.
I apologise for wasting your time

Re: Tacho Not Working

Hi Marek/Colin, Thanks for your help with this. I thought I would post some pictures of the ballast resistor connections on my car, they certainly seem to be at odds with the wiring diagram. The blue & white wire attached is not one of the 3 wires coming from the tacho connection, so I assume it is ...

Re: Tacho Not Working

Hi Colin, Thanks for your reply. Just to summarise, in my case i had a green wire and 3 braided wires going into the plug. I cut the green wire & attached that to the new green wire from the tacho. I checked continuity of the other 3 braided wires and found the one that went to the ballast resistor ...

Re: Tacho Not Working

Hi Marek,
Yes I did read the post, it was just when I spoke to the guy again at SR he said I shouldn't reinstate the loop.
I'll reinstate it in the morning & report back.
Thanks

Re: Tacho Not Working

Hello again. Apologies for the length of time it's taken to come back on this, but I've been in for a bit of an overhaul myself! I went in for a knee replacement in December, so only just got back to the car. I spoke to the guy who renovated the tacho again and he confirmed that the loop is no longe...

Re: Tacho Not Working

Thanks Marek,
So there was no need to cut the two wires going into the plug to connect them to the new wires from the tacho.
I could have used the old plug and connected the new wires to that?

Re: Tacho Not Working

Sorry it's taken me a while to come back on this, but I decided to do some other work while I was waiting. I got the tacho back from Speedograph Richfield & it looks brand new. Unfortunately they had to change the board inside the rev counter and sent some new wiring instructions: The plug at the ba...

Re: Tacho Not Working

So, as recommended by Christopher I cleaned the 4 pin connector & the connection to the ballast resistor, checked continuity which was fine & cleaned the clamp connections to the bulkhead. Then ran a new earth from the binnacle case to the bulkhead. Unfortunately it's still not working, so I guess i...

Re: Tacho Not Working

Thanks Christopher, I do have a multimeter and can use it to check continuity. I am positive that there was no earth from the binnacle case to the fastening studs. How is the binnacle case usually earthed to the chassis? the only thing connected to mine was the 4 pin plug connecting the wires you me...

Tacho Not Working

1971 V12 LHD Hi everyone, I imported my car from the US a few years ago as a non runner. Fortunately for me, it was only a detached lead to the starter motor & it started straight away. Since then I've been refurbishing it but very slowly! The latest problem is the tacho is not working (no movement ...

Sound Proofing

I am trying to determine what the substance is between the floor panel and the hardura mats, I am assuming it is some sort of sound proofing material. Although the floor panel seems sound from underneath, when I lifted the hardura I found rust along the edges of this substance and would like to remo...

Hi, I'm Ian Blessed and I am in the process of importing a light blue series 3 from the states to UK, arrives mid June. Not much experience with e types, the last car I had to work on was a Dolomite sprint back in the early 80s, but fancy getting my hands dirty again now the kids have fledged. I'm s...
