Thank you for the feedback. I checked the mounting pins on the firewall and they line up nicely when the bonnet is closed. So I'm pretty sure I just need to adjust the number of shims to bring the bonnet closer to the firewall. Yes? And maybe to sit lower on the pins when it is caught by the center ...

I have a '64 and have been thinking of doing the same gauge replacement. Which gauge did you go with? I sourced a Smiths one, but haven't done the change over yet.

Occasionally when starting, the ammeter needle pegs and sticks in the full Discharge position after the engine is running. If I tap the gauge, it comes loose and re-centers.

Any ideas why it is doing this? Doesn't always do it. Only sometimes. Weird.
