Re: Blowing Oil out of Dip Stick
Thanks for the replies. I just noticed that the rubber boot of the crank case breather at the front of the engine has a large split too. I guess that wouldn’t be helping as there wouldn't be any suction from the manifold occuring. I assume that is also paramount to help reduce any pressure build up ...

Blowing Oil out of Dip Stick
Hi All, Recently I noticed oil being blown out of my dip stick. This is in addition to oil coming out of my rear mains seal, which has subsided somewhat, since I cleared the bypass breather. The engine was fully rebuilt less than 5,000km ago but obviously the rear mains rope seal may not have been i...

Where am I bleeding from?
Just got back from a hot 200km drive in my S3, but remained nice and cool with my recently installed AC. A mandatory inspection revealed oil forming on the cross bar that is part way along under the motor, as pictured. Now before I conduct a more detailed examination to see where exactly it may be b...

Re: body number tag
It is my understanding that the vin plate fitted to the LH windscreen pillar was only for export models. I have never seen a UK car with this plate. Regards Pat I suspect that was only on LHD models, as it is not on mine, which was originally delivered into Sth. Africa, not on any AUstralian delive...

Re: Goodwood revival
Our first visit to the event, over from Australia. We went on the Saturday (really lucky with the weather!). Thought it was fantastic and brilliantly organised. Really unique and second to none in the world. Yes would have been good to have access to some of the grandstands at least, but had access ...

Re: Smiths clock replacement
They do come up from time to time on eBay, if you aren't in a hurry. I was looking for a replacement Kienzle clock for my Series 3, which I eventually found. Which, by the way I do believe that the Later Series 2 cars were also fitted with the Kienzle (dependant what was left in the parts bin as the...

Re: Doorlock reversed / mirrored on each door / side?
Hello, my door lock is reverse on each side / door. So on the left door i've to use the key in up position on the right door in the down position. I also have to lock in reverse direction. Is this normal? Can i fix it? Greets, Stefan Yes quite normal, as unusual as it may seem. Can you fix it? :scr...

Re: E type Register Directory of Vehicles & Owners
Well, sadly it looks like I've come to a dead end in trying to trace the history of my E whilst in the U.K. My last attempt was to have a friend of mine in London, submit the necessary paper work to the DVLA as I was previously advised that they will only release information to someone with a UK add...

Re: direction indicator: left one does not blink
Did the left indicator ever work? If so, it is most likely a poor light globe connection, resulting in a change in the total resistance of the circuit which causes the indicator to default to permanately on (not blinking). Have had the exact same issue on my E. A couple of taps with my hand on the f...

Re: Keeping the rain out...
Hi Steve, Water is dripping inside from the bottom of the A pillar, when the door is closed and pouring water on the roof gutter, which runs down behind the external chrome finisher on the A pillar. The drain hole at the top of the door is all clear and has the tube connected that drains to the bott...

Keeping the rain out...
Slowly sorting through a list of items that weren't put back together properly on my newly acquired fully restored 2+2. Although I tend to try and avoid taking it out in the rain, on the off chance that I do get caught out, I'd like not to have water pouring into the car. Latest leak I've identified...

?.......I use 12deg before tdc, for idle timing with the vacuum unit disconnected. This is specified in the service manual under the electrical section ...... Hi Mark, John, ...... Whilst it is generally considered that blanking it off improves performance, there is a debate about how effective it is and whether it is wise,so I elected not to go down that route. ....... Hmm, Well I've checked my setup and it is as you have said a retard vacuum unit, conn...

Re: Prescott Hill
Don't just go by what the tags say as often these are missing. For a Powr-lok, the tag if present, will say "B P-L" or "P-L". It is very easy to see if it is a LSD differential by turning the wheels when both are off the ground. Regards, Dave Not all PL diffs have the "P-L" designation on the tag, ...

Re: Mystery vacuum port
Hi guys , either on top if you use a vacuum advance module or underneath if the car has a vacuum retard module fitted, the retard module was only fitted to the 1971 year I think. Hmm, I'm learning something new every day! What is this advance or retard module you speak of, Mark and how can you tell...

Re: E type Register Directory of Vehicles & Owners
The Chassis no. is 1S 51575, if you wouldn't mind checking your books to see if it gets a mention? No luck with your chassis number John, only a 1972 model two cars before yours, and a 1973 two cars after yours. surprisingly, neither of these are registered on exedata. I'm guessing yours was regist...
