3.8 Clutch spring colour

Hi Folks

What colour springs should a 3.8 E-type have on a Borg & Beck clutch? Did these come fully painted from B & B or did Jaguar just splash a bit of colour on each spring to determine between other clutches? Think they should be a mauve colour.

Thanks Gary

Re: Painted wheels???

No brainer ... earlier cars look so right with 'painted wires'. Each to their own but I have had both types on my cars in the past. Here is my 1962 in restoration, 'painted' looks great with the chrome spinner.

Polishing Engine Alloy

Hi Folks Any of you got any tips on polishing the alloy parts of the engine and Carbs etc. I don't want that really shining look that costs about £600 by a pro but doesn't last, just a good way to get a nice shine. Been looking for a buffing wheel for my cordless drill but can only find Chinese rubb...

Water pump housing 3.8

Hi Folks

Is this a County brand pump I just removed from my original 1962 3.8. I have told the bypass spouts never looked like that ( the wall thickness ) on a genuine pump and genuine pumps where quite clean castings.

Roof Lead Joint

Hi Folks Trying to get to the bottom of when the 45 degree roof lead loaded joint line changed. I understand the straight join line was used with the Concrete Moulds with Jaguar Cars not expecting to make that many cars. The later 90 degree join line shown at the bottom of my photo shows the later j...

Heater pipes

Hi I am fitting new heater pipes before painting car, should the plates on the ends with 3 rivet holes be left black, or painted body colour.

Also every rivet gun I can find won't allow the rivet to pull up square, the pipe gets in the way of the gun.

Thanks Gary

Hi Gary

You sort of invited that by challenging one of the world's authorities on E Types. Years of experience and patient research makes David a highly respected doyen of things E Type.

It's a good job we're all civilised here. :drinkingcheers:

Re: Crayon Writing

I think this is fake added by a later owner, how could a salesman of the day try to explain why the car had a number in crayon so visible. Before making such authoritative statements maybe you should do considerably more research into the practices at Jaguar and the social norms of the day. ...

Re: Crayon Writing

I find it strange to see a crayon number exposed like the one shown above, behind the bottle on the bulkhead. Jaguar Cars would not allow any car out with a crayon marks exposed. I think this is fake added by a later owner, how could a salesman of the day try to explain why the car had a number in c...

Hi Folks ... whilst stripping my 1962 FHC down I have found these crayon marks. On one of the bulkhead blanking plates on the slope below the main bulkhead is has the number 4168, in blue crayon. Then under the dashboard it has 4329 and is signed and undelined by Bob !! in red crayon. Anyone else fo...
