Re: 3.8 Series 1 - specific : Removing The Sump And Changing the Sump-To-Seal-Carrier Seal ?

I have removed the sump from my 3.8 without removing the reaction plate. It was a long time ago and I don't remember the crank setting to do this but someone will - I think you're trying to level the crank (best as possible) for cylinders one and two (rear of the engine). I am pretty sure that I lef...

Re: Coopercraft Vented Front Disc size ?

I had not realised that Coopercraft had stopped trading. I spoke to Peter in 2024 and he rebuilt my vented front calipers. These were 15-20 years old and some of the dust covers had started to perish so I decided on a full rebuild. He did those in March 2024 and, as he was only an hour away in Sidmo...

Re: Series 2, 2+2 Windscreen and rear window chrome surround needed

Hello Richard

I have a spare upper tailgate window chrome, bought new from SNG a few years ago and not needed for my 3.8 FHC. I be happy to sell that. If you are interested, let me know and I'll post some photos. I'm in Somerset.

Regards, Chris

Re: Brakes sticking on

Have a look at the emergency/handbrake as well. If this sticks slightly, often caused by bent retraction forks, then it heats the rear discs which heat the rear brake circuit fluid and can cause the brakes to stick on as the fluid expands and takes up the allowance in the master cylinder rods - fron...

Re: Overflowing Fuel

Hi Ed I think we've all reached points in projects, cars or otherwise, where we despair of ever finishing. Spending a while away from it might help but the best would be to get some help as that can encourage you. The carbs are not the most complex parts to work on so, there is always hope. I'm in S...

Re: At last - the W&P E-type hardtop

Sorry to hear you are not well. What a shame to sell on the E after so many years as well as the XKSS but no-one can say you haven't had fun in them! The hardtop is unusual and I hope it sells easily after all the effort in getting it to this stage. I remember seeing it at Lee's workshop, which remi...

Re: Diagnose Engine Rattle

In the first post, Simon, you said that you've had this since the engine was rebuilt so it seems unlikely that the build up of brass, if it is that, would be causing the problem. It must have taken time to build up so you'd imagine it would have been a progressive problem. You need to address that o...

Re: Independent inspection

Hope this worked out well. Any news after the inspection? Are you happy with the car as that is, ultimately, the most important thing.

Best wishes, Chris

Re: Independent inspection

I don't know how much deposit you've paid and if it's refundable (if you find issues) but as you're not used to buying E-Types then paying a 25% premium over what people here would pay so that you can buy from a dealer with a warranty is fair to me. It looks like you've paid more than that but if yo...

Re: Independent inspection

If you don't get any joy here for someone to inspect the car, try calling the local JDC area (or head office), probably area 19, Peter Jones. The details are on the Jaguar Drivers Club website. There is also the JEC. I assume the vendor is happy for an inspection? Where are you driving the car to wh...

Re: Independent inspection

This is probably a very nice car and a lot of money was spent on it. Looking quickly on my phone, there are a few odd things for me: A visible seam between the sills and rear wings. A visible seam between rear wing and boot floor. The bonnet doesn't look perfectly aligned with the front sill where t...

Re: FHC rear seal (yes again)

Although you're mainly talking about the glass seal and chromes, I suppose the question is about the hatch to body seal? If so, the open side faces outwards. When the lid is closed, the seal forms into a channel and this allows any water that gets into the seal to run around until it reaches the dra...

Re: Diagnose Engine Rattle

As James said, it sounds like the top chain adjustment. The noise is very apparent when the revs fall after you raised them - this is a classic symptom of a loose chain. Obviously, check those gaps again first but I would then recheck the top chain. When you make the hot engine video, try blipping t...

I also use Esso Synergy Supreme as it is usually ethanol free. From their website: "Esso Synergy Supreme+ 99 contains zero ethanol, except (for logistics reasons) sites supplied from Scotland, North Wales, North England and Cornwall." Annoyingly, they also have this update on the website: "We curren...

I'd also check the big diameter pipe that joins the filler neck to the tank - there are two jubilees there. See the parts manual, plate 34 items 8 and 9.

Good luck, Chris

A lot or aerospace engineers out there, it seems... A bit odd but I happened to look a few minutes ago as I seemed to remember that it would have ended at 7:10. The auction was still running and each time somebody entered a new highest bid, the remaining time increased by one minute (I think). I'm n...

Hi Richard Cranfield was a good place to upgrade your apprenticeship qualification to a degree and was quite popular in the aircraft industry but it seems to have changed to mainly business courses these days. I did Aerospace Design there and it stood me in good stead for my career. It is a small wo...

Re: First post on this forum

I don't own a Series 3 so could only comment generally - on my phone, the Yellow one looks the most "honest". Have you driven one yet? It would be worth going on a test drive with one close to you to be sure the V12 appeals. I mainly commented as I see you were apprenticed as an aircraft engineer an...

Re: Tyre Dilemma - Blockley vs. Pirelli. Advice Please?

I see you said that you wanted to check the caster. The first thing I'd do is go over the complete suspension and check all bearings, ball joints, bushes and so on. Then follow sections J and K (I think) of the manual to set up the suspension and finally, take the car for a four wheel full suspensio...

I like a series 2 look sometimes. They are all brilliant cars and from the driver's seat, much the same.
