Handbrake compensator

Rear wheel bearings
My car is a 1963 3.8 Fhc. Do I need to remove the back axle to change the rear wheel bearings or can they be changed with the car just jacked up and the hub carrier etc removed?

when I start the engine the ammeter shows a discharge as expected but once the engine is running it still shows it discharging.
