Re: MK2 all synchro gearbox swap???
Hi. Think I have read on this forum that someone have done that. But you need another clutch bell housing to fit the all synchro box. A bell housing from a limosine will fit if opening the starter mounting holes. Guess yours is a 3.8 and I think the bellhousing from a 4.2 will fit. All this have to ...

Re: Fuel pump S3
Posting mostly for information, may affect others. My problem was the carbon contact in the distributor cap. Found out when I used a strob lamp. Cyl 1A and 3B was missing ignition a sec or two now and then. Took out the carbon contact, reshaped and polished, missing ignition moved to other cylinders...

Re: Fuel pump S3
Hi. Thanks. Have been a bit unclear. 4.4 psi into carbs, return line closed and engine not running. 2.8 psi into carbs NRV operating ( fuel returning to tank ) engine not running. With a T in the return line I measured 3.2 psi in the return line. So fuel needs 3.2 psi of pressure to make it back to ...

Re: Fuel pump S3
Hi. Thank you. 3.2 psi are after fuel have flowed through the NRV, with fuel having no were else to escape. Ie the NRV are «stealing» 1.2 psi as fuel are flowing through. Due to winter conditions with salted roads have not tested car after work as described. Hoping for a nice dry day or two. Have to...

Fuel pump S3
Hi. 1973 S3 2+2 LHD US import. Engine is stuttering / coughing on hard acceleration, as in too lean mixture. One of the carb diaphragm had a small hole, replaced all four. No difference. Oil level correct, ATF. Adding choke did no difference. Raised all carb needles 1/4 turn. If any difference worse...
Steering
Hi. 1973 S3 power steering. The steering on my car is somewhat “vague”. Kind of unpresise, car sometimes start to weer very slightly right or left and need correction. I know this may come from a number of reasons, but if anyone know of a specific reason would like to know as a starting point. Every...

Re: Stromberg damper oil.
Thank you. Have been using 20/50 engine oil, then for some reason I cannot remember I changed to straight 30. And I lowered the needles slightly at the same time. Probably a bad idea, as you should never change two parameters at the same time. Which I deep inside knew, but on the forum it seems to b...

Stromberg damper oil.
Hi. -73 S3 V12. I am fiddeling with the carburettors and adjusting the needle height. But what about the damper oil? What effect will a heavier oil give? And a lighter oil? And what effect, if any will a low / high oil level give? Critically low level I have experienced and have replaced the O ring ...

Re: Carbs - heat exchanger gasket question
Just a comment to holeshot’s pickture. I have just removed all four temp compensators, and all of them had a «gasket» in the carb body looking very similar to the one marked original. They were all hard and distorted and have probably caused compensators to be more or less open at all time. But they...

Hi, thanks.
Living and learning.
Yes the head is flat, it was the timing chain I was thinking about.
Marek, your teflon seals sounds interesting. Sending you a PM.
Rgds Harald.

Re: Series 3 cylinder head
Hi. Thanks for information. Have taken out 3 exhaust valves ( and 1 inlet valve ) to have a look and find out whats in there. The stem seals on exh valves look identical to them on the inlet. Definitely no garter spring. Should I leave seals on exhaust valve were they are, or it is better to get rid...

Re: Series 3 cylinder head
Thank you for information. Unfortunately I don’t know anything about donor car. Valve seals leaves me a little puzelled. Both SNG Barrat and SCparts lists valve stem seals for inlet valves only in their «parts lists». I have an engine parts list, e type S3. Says nothing about valve stem seals. ( pho...

Re: Series 3 cylinder head
Hi. Ended up bying the heads and they look ok. But there is always something. Upon closer examination there are some stripped threads and needs recoiling. One in the head for the stud to attach the camshaft block. 5/16 18tpi. At first I assumed it is BSF / withworth thread, but could it be UNC? Two ...

Series 3 cylinder head
Hello. Two cylinder heads have come up for sale here in Norway, seller claim they will fit E type S3. He quotes part no. C32256 / C32257. Photo shows C32257 clearly. Other one a bit unclear, P32256K. As far as I found out theese numbers are for XJS pre HE. Are XJS heads identical to E type heads? If...

Re: Synchro mechanism
Have also checked out the website mentioned by Steve. Eric, I got my shaft from a small web based jaguar part dealer here in Norway. ( sirwilliam.no ) They got most of their parts from sngbarrat ( I think ). It is run by a Jag enthusiast ( Tore ). They have some kind of deal with barrat. I could ord...

Re: Synchro mechanism
Moving slowly ahead. New layshaft, reverse shaft and ballbearings obtained. Waiting for a few hundred roller pins. Reverse shaft, from packing looks like NOS. But had expected it to be shiny but it is matt black. Supposed to be like this? ( pickture ). Randall, that idea occured to me. But the deten...

Re: Synchro mechanism
Thank you. Chekced it out. It reminded me that I also have to look at the top lid, checking springs, balls, detents etc. Also found a video on what to look for on the synchro hubs. After wathing that one I think mine is fine - for now at least.

Synchro mechanism
Hi. Manual gearbox 1973 series 3. Rebuilding gearbox, new bearings etc. Worn layshaft and reverse shaft also needs replacing. Gearbox were making rumbling noises. And gear stick moved forward when accellerating and rearward when decellerating. Have some sugestion that it might be worn synchro hubs. ...
