Re: Carbs - heat exchanger gasket question
Just a comment to holeshot’s pickture. I have just removed all four temp compensators, and all of them had a «gasket» in the carb body looking very similar to the one marked original. They were all hard and distorted and have probably caused compensators to be more or less open at all time. But they...

Hi, thanks.
Living and learning.
Yes the head is flat, it was the timing chain I was thinking about.
Marek, your teflon seals sounds interesting. Sending you a PM.
Rgds Harald.

Re: Series 3 cylinder head
Hi. Thanks for information. Have taken out 3 exhaust valves ( and 1 inlet valve ) to have a look and find out whats in there. The stem seals on exh valves look identical to them on the inlet. Definitely no garter spring. Should I leave seals on exhaust valve were they are, or it is better to get rid...

Re: Series 3 cylinder head
Thank you for information. Unfortunately I don’t know anything about donor car. Valve seals leaves me a little puzelled. Both SNG Barrat and SCparts lists valve stem seals for inlet valves only in their «parts lists». I have an engine parts list, e type S3. Says nothing about valve stem seals. ( pho...

Re: Series 3 cylinder head
Hi. Ended up bying the heads and they look ok. But there is always something. Upon closer examination there are some stripped threads and needs recoiling. One in the head for the stud to attach the camshaft block. 5/16 18tpi. At first I assumed it is BSF / withworth thread, but could it be UNC? Two ...

Series 3 cylinder head
Hello. Two cylinder heads have come up for sale here in Norway, seller claim they will fit E type S3. He quotes part no. C32256 / C32257. Photo shows C32257 clearly. Other one a bit unclear, P32256K. As far as I found out theese numbers are for XJS pre HE. Are XJS heads identical to E type heads? If...

Re: Synchro mechanism
Have also checked out the website mentioned by Steve. Eric, I got my shaft from a small web based jaguar part dealer here in Norway. ( sirwilliam.no ) They got most of their parts from sngbarrat ( I think ). It is run by a Jag enthusiast ( Tore ). They have some kind of deal with barrat. I could ord...

Re: Synchro mechanism
Moving slowly ahead. New layshaft, reverse shaft and ballbearings obtained. Waiting for a few hundred roller pins. Reverse shaft, from packing looks like NOS. But had expected it to be shiny but it is matt black. Supposed to be like this? ( pickture ). Randall, that idea occured to me. But the deten...

Re: Synchro mechanism
Thank you. Chekced it out. It reminded me that I also have to look at the top lid, checking springs, balls, detents etc. Also found a video on what to look for on the synchro hubs. After wathing that one I think mine is fine - for now at least.

Synchro mechanism
Hi. Manual gearbox 1973 series 3. Rebuilding gearbox, new bearings etc. Worn layshaft and reverse shaft also needs replacing. Gearbox were making rumbling noises. And gear stick moved forward when accellerating and rearward when decellerating. Have some sugestion that it might be worn synchro hubs. ...
Re: Gearbox
Hi again. -73 series 3. The OD gearbox from a 420G saloon have been working fine. And original box have rested in peace in pieces all summer. But I have now taken most of it apart. Earlier in this thread I got a lot of good advice. This gearbox had noises which have been discussed. And gear stick mo...

Re: Gearbox removal with engine in situ
Hi. The OD is now fitted and working very satisfactorly in my S 3 e type. It’s ( almost) a shame Jaguar didn’t have an option with OD on the e type. It will now cruise at 70mph with 2000 rpm, very satisfactory! It is a tight fit under there but no modification, cutting, grinding, banging or welding ...

Thanks. Should have thought that one out. I have thougt about that relay as «start relay». Somewhat annoying that same item have different names in different publications.

Re: Gearbox
Hello.
Reread every post. As I understand it, its the reverse gears that cause the rumble. In other words, the rumble remains even if I replace the reverse gear shaft?
Bill, I sent you a PM about shaft.

Re: Gearbox
Thanks again. Understand your test set up. But I do intend to replace both reverseshaft and layshaft, would not be wise not to, at this point. I was kind of suggesting that my worn layshaft could be rumbling. Checked with SngBarrat and they only have the nominal size 3mm rollers. And have not found ...
Re: Gearbox
Hi. Thanks for loads of good advice. Checked my micrometer, zeroes within .005 mm, also same on a new 1/4 inch roller, 6.35mm and same on a 25mm «check rod» that came with the micrometer. So my needles are definitely quite undersize. But I was too preoccupied with the needles. Checking my layshaft, ...
Re: Gearbox
Hi, thank you all got a lot of good tips on how to procede! Clearified a lot! Checked spare manual and service manuals. Big question now, what do I replace my needle pins with? Spare suppliers ( sng barrat / sc spares ++ ) I have cheked don’t supply anything but «basic» neddles. I assume theese are ...
