Re: Wheels update
Hi all, I have just acquired 6 by 16 Turrino wires which use stainless spokes and alloy rims which feels significantly lighter than a standard wire/tyre. I can buy tyres 195, 205, or 215, which appropriate aspect ratio to maintain rolling radius as standard, and I am assured that none of these optio...

Wheels update
Hi all, hoping the finish my V12 OTS rebuild by early summer, last expense will be the road wheels and tyres. Standard tyres have quite baloony side walls, and as I’m hoping to stiffen the drive a bit, I thought 7 by 16 wheels with lower profile tyres might be a good idea. MWS and Turing do them but...

Re: Chrome strip in Tailgate heated backlight seal
Hi Geoff I note your considerable frustration! Beaulieu Garage in Lyndhurst Road has a great many years experience and has specialised in restoring E types. When I was there a few weeks ago they still have at least a couple covered in dust in their large workshop area behind the showroom, awaiting s...

Re: Getting oil pressure pre first start
Thank you Marek for your prompt answer. It must be better to let gravity get the oil into the pump from the top rather than suck it under vacuum from the bottom and I was concerned about the rope seal, hoping that the short time the pressure would be needed would not broach it. But the reason I had ...

Getting oil pressure pre first start
Hi all, I wonder if anyone can advise experience of this: I have built up the engine, installed it and attached everything. I used engine build white grease around the oil pump gears and on the crank and big end bearings, and used engine oil everywhere with the build but that was a few weeks ago now...

Re: Gearbox mount with overdrive
Thanks guys, so noting the clearance problems you have had Colin when the box sits too high, placing shims into the gap shown in my photo and so picking up on Marek’s recommendation will avoid clearance issues (cos the rig will sit lower) and remove the slack. This will I hope discourage movement an...

Gearbox mount with overdrive
Hi all, very aware this has been done to death before, however I have a specific question- I have installed a compact Laycock overdrive on my standard V12 gearbox, and used a standard mounting spring and large top seat. The result is the bottom washer and locking nyloc nut hangs down slightly lower ...

I used Kiley, they were excellent. Courier it to them and it will come back fixed and painted, ready to go straight back on the car.

Re: IRS mounts
No, I fitted standard ones and had the usual issues as covered in the extensive thread you’ve attached. Does the IRS flex excessively with standard mounts anyway? Unless for full on racing suggest hard rubbers not the best choice, will likely make a difficult job even harder.

Re: Classis fuel injection
Just to add further to what I think might be the most interesting question on here- whether to go EFI and enjoy the better reliability, smoothness and fuel consumption or stay traditional and loyal to the history and stay with Strombergs. I have decided to rebuild my engine with EFI, and plan to use...

Re: Front wheel bearings question
Thanks guys very helpful to know I haven’t misunderstood this apparent design issue, I will investigate the spacer and shim modification further. Presumably you would still leave it clamped up but with tiny end float like the rear hubs

Front wheel bearings question
Hi all, I’m rebuilding the front hubs (1973 S3 OTS) and have pressed in new bearings and oil seal. I am re-using the stub axles but both have a slight ring on them in the position of the inner race. The design of the hubs, with the nut adjusted to leave end float, leaves both bearing races seemingly...

Hi George, around £1,100 and I will use the original bellhousing, keeping the original unrestored gearbox in store.

Re: V12 Auto to Manual Conversion
For my V12 OTS rebuild I’ve gone for an XJ6 box, which has the same ratios as my original box, plus a Laycock A compact overdrive and I got O/D Spares in Rugby to refurb both and bolt them together which they have done. The car is not finished and so I have yet to test it but I was pleased with the ...

Re: Boot floor series 3
Hi Marec yes good question, not a lot is probably the answer but it must reduce noise to some extent. The key point though is I want to accurately rebuild it as close as possible to how it was- I started with an unmolested time warp car that had sat in a dry garage for 25 years and don’t want to und...

Re: Boot floor series 3
Hi Dick thanks for that, I got this roll from a leading trim company in the UK, in their view the best alternative to the original which is unavailable. Closed cell foam sheet does not have the plastic top surface and is quite soft, so I thought probably not long lasting. So I’m going to persevere w...
