I have bought a new coolant expansion tank to replace what has become little more than a colander.
What can I do to prevent rust on the inside of the new steel tank?
Thanks

Re: Engine acid dipping
Hi.
You don't say which engine you have. You may find the results will be different between acid dipping an alloy block and a cast iron lump.

Re: Butec Alternator.
Problem solved. The instructions given in the ROM are not quite correct in so much as all the instructions are there but not in the right order.

Re: Butec Alternator.
Thanks Colin. Sorry for the slow response, I've been away for the weekend. I've seen that manual but it doesn't really show any more than the ROM. I can't see how the three wires from the stator windings connect into the slip ring housing.

Butec Alternator.
In order to test the rectifiers and replace as necessary I am trying to strip down the alternator. The manual says in para. 86.10.08 item 15 "Remove the three nuts from the field terminal posts and detach the stator winding terminals." The diagram shows these terminal wires exiting the stator coils ...

Starter Motor Cable
I need to replace the power cable to the starter motor. Does anyone know what the current rating should be for this cable.

2+2 front seat belts
I feel sure that someone on the Forum has replaced the original seat belts although I can not find any info. about such.
Can anyone give details of lap & diagonal belts that are suitable, ideally inertia reel but static will do.
Thanks

Power Steering
Does anyone have or can point me in the direction of photos showing the routing of the HP and LP pipes between the PS pump and the rack? RHD car.
Is it just me that only takes pics. that are never needed while not snapping what becomes essential?

Re: Floor Pan Coating
My 71 s3 has what sounds like the same floor covering that you describe. Mine is very brittle, certainly not paint, it is in squares very much like Marley floor tiles. Mine was definitely factory fitted ,sprayed body colour. I can't tell what was used to fix it to the steel floor. In the "old days" ...

Power Steering rack Specialist
I've been searching around for a recon. rack for my 1971 s3. Has anyone used/got any comments about Western Power Steering in Bristol or M & P Steering in Gillingham? Both offer what seems the exact same reconditioning service but with £150 price difference? PM me if more appropriate.

I heard that we got them off ebay from the Lucas second hand stall but all the smoke come out of the wires.

Re: JD43 torsion bar tensioner tool alternative
How many s3 torsion bars have you taken off/refitted to come to that conclusion? It is wrong. The job can be done without the use of JD43.

Re: Setting up Strombergs
Signmman - the s3 Strombergs do have temperature (heat) compensators but whether they are like the s2 ones I don't know. Each compensator has a nut which can be adjusted to alter the temp. at which the bi-metal strip operates. Each carb. has an idle Trim Screw but not on the Temp. Comps. Kevin - yes...

I am about to refill the brakes and clutch after replacing/rebuilding all the components (calipers, cylinder pipes). There are no upgrades only original bits other than Rob Beere remote bleeders on the rear. How much fluid will I need for this, I don't want to run out part way thro' the job nor do I w...

Re: Setting up Strombergs
I reconnected the vacuum line from the LR carb to the dissy and when warmed up the revs were at 800ish on the tacho. I only needed the choke to start the engine and could push it right in within a few seconds. The revs were at 6-700 and rose to 800 as it got up to temp. I followed the adjustment ins...

Re: Setting up Strombergs
Thanks Andrew, Bob. All info/opinions gratefully received.
Bob for info. early S3 V12 did not have a thermo valve or the facility to fit one in the o/s manifold nor for that matter in the water rail.
