No - a jig is not essential , but it does help. What is essential is that you tie the A and B pillars together with a welded bar ( or two ) on the side where the sill is removed, so all interior furnishings need to come out. I guess I should have mentioned that I had removed the grub screws per the instructions in the service manual prior to posting. (I was shocked to see that they are slotted screws! )
