Re: cooling fan

The S1 3.8 has a fan relay, as does my '64 3.8, and also shown in the service manual.

Re: Headlamp surrounds screw thread size?

881261/850843/890251/861557 Something amiss there. Maybe the change was from slotted to phillps. My car is 861460 and has slotted machine screws, definitely not self tapping.

Re: Anyone tried Valvoline SAE30 in a Moss box?

I just use a modern 20w50 in my moss box, works fine, good shifting when cold or hot.

Re: FUEL PIPE IN THE BOOT

I don't think ethanol is detrimental to the white nylon pipe, which is available from hydraulic supply companies at next to no cost.

Re: Anyone tried Valvoline SAE30 in a Moss box?

SAE 30 is the specified oil for a moss box. BMC & Triumph cars also specified SAE30 for their gearboxes.

Re: FUEL PIPE IN THE BOOT

My 64 3.8 has white nylon pipe with tight barbed fittings, as I believe most other models have, also same pipes through to the glass filter bowl and then on to the metal carbs connector pipe.

Re: 2+2 windscreen seals

Those filler strips are generic to a number of older British cars, some of which did not have a chrome finisher but used the chromed filler strip e.g. early Mini's.

Re: Inlet side “tappet noise”

Are there any witness marks on the cam sleeve? Look all around the sleeve, if the sleeve is loose it can turn, so the marks won't be where you expect them to be. Also check all the sleeves it might not be the one you're looking at. Also note that a loose sleeve will not affect the valve gap.

Also do you have a vented or unvented fuel filler cap? If vented check that the vent hole isn't blocked or blocked by the gasket.

Re: Top of the door frame gap

I have a similar problem. The difference was in the doors. These cars wern't welded by bots. You can put some shims under the frame where it attaches to the top of the door to even them out, or just live with it because you cant lower the frame without some cutting/bending/welding somewhere.

Re: Camshaft alignment in warped cylinder head???

Check the alignment of the cam bearings with a good straight edge. The center two tend to be higher if the head is warped. I had my Mk 7 successfully linebored by removing some material from the mating surfaces of the bearing caps. A good engineering shop should be able to do this.

Re: Water temp sender stripped threads

Had the same problem with my 3.8. I noticed that there was still good thread below the reach of the sender unit. I just happened to have on my shelf a generic sender unit with a much deeper reach which fits tightly and works perfectly.

Re: Cylinder Head Woes

I did you do your compression test when the engine was hot or cold? Does the car smoke? Squirt some oil down the bores and test again. If there's an improvement it could mean some wear on rings or bores but if it's not significant leave well alone.

Re: Windscreen seal - correct placement

I think you've got it the wrong way round, the filler seal goes on the outside (engine side) and the chrome trim goes over it, locking into the 2 grooves or lips either side of it.
