Understood, thanks Joey. I was kidding to keep it light, always trying to remember this is for fun.
Watching your project with interest, envious of your speed.

Re: The 5 Speed is here……..
Hi Joey. I'm not saying you're going to have an issue here, just that it seems a poor solution. The cross member goes from sill to sill and, for example, is carrying vertical loads from the gearbox and some of the mass of the driver and passenger. Clive - I remember another discussion where you wer...

Clive...far better to start a new topic rather than have this thread drift off in different directions....check out our search function...lots of info already here on Tremac 5 speed..Steve Thanks Steve. I actually raised the question here because I couldn't find anything recent by search and though...

Re: The 5 Speed is here……..
I don't think the mods in the picture will significantly affect the strength of the mount in the direction where the main loads apply. The important property to react the weight and torque is vertical height, which you haven't changed, you're just relocated part of it rearward. Arguably you've cause...

Re: Manual steering rack , tie rod play.
Thanks for the advice Clive, I’ll see how the steering feels when it’s up and running in a few weeks and go from there. And yes i do remember the threepenny bit, occasionally found under a Christmas pud 😁 Arguably my greatest career achievement was getting the term "threepenny bit feel" included in...

Re: Manual steering rack , tie rod play.
although I had purchased new cups they are now supplied as plastic/nylon replacements and we preferred the look of the metal originals Obviously I don't know what material your plastic replacements are, but if they were the Teflon typically used in quality joints you might find it worth fitting the...

Re: 5 speed xj6 or O/D box for 2+2 s1?
The LT77 was widely used so there are varieties of linkages available. Rover SD1 , Triumph TR7 5 speed, XJ6 S3 ( probably more common in 3.4 litre versions ) , LR, Sherpa!!-( but the ratios are not suitable on the Sherpa box ) . However, I think the OD box is more suitable because the LT77 was pron...

Re: Power Steering To be or Not to Be
I’ll offer some general comments, prefaced with the fact that I’ve never driven an E-type with power steering. On the other hand I spend over forty years working on car development, primarily chassis systems with a lot of time specifically on steering systems. I don’t have detail of the Jaguar syste...

Re: Power Steering To be or Not to Be
Hello again Nigel, Reading your original question again, can you define what you mean by the sensitivity you want to reduce? Is it the textbook definition of excessive steering sensitivity - too much increase of lateral force (cornering power) for a change of steering wheel angle? If we can confirm ...

Re: Power Steering To be or Not to Be
This is a general reply since I'm not familiar with the detail of the Jaguar system. Assuming it's a standard system of that era, I think it would be acceptable but not desirable to run the power system without a pump, at least for a short period with fluid in the system. I say not desirable for a c...

Re: Identifying shocks and ride height
I like to check spring loads, ride heights etc. graphically with a chart of spring load vs. length. It only requires two pieces of information for coil springs (you're on your own with torsion bars!) - spring length at a given load condition, such as the free length of the spring standing on the ben...

Re: E type Roll Centre and Handling
The lower link would resist the bending loads in landing a jumbo jet !! here is a picture of it - it is a shame you have disposed of the originals because it would answer so many of your questions You're right, thanks to those who've responded anyway. My questions and musings are really just curios...

Re: E type Roll Centre and Handling
Hi Clive Yes, these are major changes and I hope it works out. I can see why you have decided to change both front and rear suspension so you can tune the two together. You are the expert for suspension design so should know what you're aiming for and will, likely, achieve. Thanks Chris, You’re gen...

Re: E type Roll Centre and Handling
Good point about the solid pivots restricting steer, although I wonder whether the tubular section of the lower link is stiff enough to do that? As an aside, is it stiff enough to resist bending from the spring / damper loads? Just curious. While we're on the subject of the IRS pivots, is their axis...

Re: E type Roll Centre and Handling
The way the original IRS works is really quiet tricky to visualise, and trickier to describe. Got it, thanks Tom. I didn't know the role played by the V-mounts, my interpretation from your description is: - the Jaguar system will pull the wheel and subframe assembly forward with wheel travel in eit...

Re: E type Roll Centre and Handling
Hi Clive, I’ll be keen to see what you come up with. I found this interesting video of Evolution Etypes IRS, it shows some extensive modification work that you might find helpful: Thanks, I watched the video a few times but didn't really understand the Evolution system. My understanding of the orig...

Re: E type Roll Centre and Handling
My two penny worth. An E Type is a pleasure to drive just like a Tiger Moth is a pleasure to fly. Both are of their respective eras and changing suspension or wing shape might modernise them but detracts from the reason for enjoying them. If someone needs power steering on their E or changed suspen...

Re: E type Roll Centre and Handling
I am going to speak my mind. I have rarely heard such nonsense as "I don't need to drive it at this stage to understand it ...I know how a sub-optimal roll steer or castor curve feels, I don't need to drive it....First fix it, then drive it", and this from a man who has never answered , as far as I...
