That’s a strange line of reasoning from Jaguar... if the level drops (due to a leak), the sensor at the engine outlet will remain immersed in the flow as long as there is fluid in the radiator, whereas the one in the water tank will be dry—or nearly so.

The rope seal requires the crank to be turning to be effective, so with this much oil sitting over it, it will almost certainly start dripping. So, unfortunately, not a good way to see if it leaks. Just so I don't end up covered in oil while I'm working on it! Is it necessary to drain the sump before removing the oil pump return line? I have a major leak where the elbow connects to the sump.

Just my experience with DOT 5 silicone brake fluid: I put silicone in my MGA over 40 years ago (1983) and I haven't changed the fluid, bled the system, had any leaks or blockages since... so I didn't hesitate to put it in the MK2 in 2020; the E-Type and Lotus will follow if needed.
