Re: Insulation on exhaust hoses
I have done this to both of the down pipes which are carbon steel and was warned that a process which the writer called "mummification" would occur. This "process" supposedly resulted in the relatively rapid loss of metal beneath the wrap - some form of corrosion that affected the carbon steel as a ...

Re: Oiling door hinges
Paul,
Thanks for the reply. On close examination, I found the slots, both sealed from years of inattention and a recent paint job. I've reamed one out with a drill and repeated oiling and working the door has significantly improved the action.

Oiling door hinges
Are there any oil holes on the Series 1 door hinges? I've squirted silicone lubricant on the "gaps" in the hinges and get some improvement in movement but they are still way too stiff. I hate to go to the trouble of re-pinning the hinge - will removing the door and working the hinge in a vice help? ...

Re: Roof sound deadening?
Jeremy, It took me a while to get my registeration correct so I could reply but, yes I had the same concern compounded by my location, the southern US, and a black fhc. The heat might soften the adhesive and the pattern of something like sound-deadening tiles would show through. I solved the problem...

Spare tire size
I have a 205/65/15 spare tire in my '63 FHC. It fits fine, a little snug but not a problem to drop in and center over the fastener hub.

Xenon lights vs. 55/60W halogens
One suggestion to the addition of halogens to early E-Jags - install a pair of Bosch-type relays and large gauge supply wiring to the low and high beam headlamp circuits to avoid running the lamp current through the Lucas dash switches. I don't remember the exact relationship but lamp output is an e...

After-market A/C system
Geoff, I bought a '63 FHC from a fellow who lived it in Santa Fe, New Mexico, the original owner, and it was fitted with an A/C system similar to the one you describe. One condenser under each rear flank in a fiberglass housing, an evaporator behind the seats, and a great, honking Tecumseh compresso...

DOT5 brake fluid
When the mechanical work on my Series 1 (with a Series 2 brake system) was finished, it was filled with DOT5 fluid based on the success the mechanic had with DOT5 in his Series 3. The car sat for a number of years before the body work was finished - then the trouble started -3 failed reservoirs, fai...
