Re: What are these for

Hi both, Wheel arch showing location of tab and I do have a new boot floor.

It could well be that they should have been folded up inside the boot.

What are these for

Could anyone tell me what these tabs are for. There's one in each wheel arch.

Solid pinion spacer

Does anyone know where you can get the solid pinion spacer, p/n 8029 rather than the collapsible version. My diff came with collapsibles on both the pinion and output shafts but having read most of the previous posts concerning ccollapsible spacers I'm inclined to go the solid route if I can get the...

Re: Quaife diff

Hi Steve, Yes I think those are the options if I want to fit the Quaife in a salisbury shell. I also checked the blackline and it's exactly the same as the Quaife,. That is the crown wheel flange being 2mm closer to the non drive end. I borrowed the Quaife diff, so at this stage I wasn't in a positi...

Re: Quaife diff

Hi Bill,

I do have a series 1 but unfortunately the diff is a replacement dated 1990, which puts it in the xj6/xjs category. As such the shims are between diff bearings and case. With the Quaife this would mean I have 37thou to make any adjustments due to the Crown flange position.

Re: Quaife diff

Hi steve, The use of spacers with this Quaife diff will make the problem worse. The spacers normally fit between flange and crown wheel. I know that Blackline diffs use spacers with the crown wheel but I've not been able to get hold of the mechanical drawings for their diffs to understand the implic...

Quaife diff

I acquired a quaife diff to double check suitability of fit to replace my damaged unit. Overall this is a great looking unit. Dimensionally it will take the standard diff case bearings and the jag crown wheel would physically fit. The problem is that the flange which the crown wheel bolts to is almo...

Set of diff gears

I've been looking for a set of internal gears for the 4ha diff carrier but not found anything yet. Has anyone fitted a Quaife or blackwell heli diff as a replacement. If so, where there any issues.

Re: Differential advice

Bill,

Thanks for the offer of the feet but I've just checked mine against the irs cage and everything aligns.

Re: Differential advice

Looking at the spring you're correct, although how that popped so neatly around that bearing is another thing! Steve, I have a new irs cage from one of the usuals. It came with the car and it is for etypes. The mounting brackets as you say are something else. Is there a specific measurement regardin...

Re: Differential advice

Many thanks for the input so far. Having bought a partial restoration, I'm not sure if this diff has ever been fitted to this car. That's what you get for picking a job up part way. I cleaned everything up this morning because I'm still chasing the source of the debris, Bill, the spring I mentioned ...

Re: Differential advice

Hi Steve, no it's one solid piece.

I was surprised to see the collapsible spacer. I thought these were a later feature.

Hi Steve,

Yes it does have a large nut, 1 7/8" with tapered bearings.

Re: Differential advice

From Bill's post, it looks as though I have a type 2 diff or could it be type 3! Having split the output coupling today it's a single unit. Interesting thing is it also uses a collapsible spacer to get it's preload on the taper bearings for the output shaft. I thought they used a sleeve and shims. I...

Re: Differential advice

I've started the strip down and I've attached a shot of the output drive. From previous posts, it would appear to be a type jag 1 diff, although Correct me please. The project is a partial restoration so I have no knowledge of performance issues prior to my ownership. Hence the strip down. It is a P...

Re: Differential advice

Many thanks for the responce. I was aiming to do a full strip down. As you say steve, the amount of debris is so great the problem should be fairly obvious.

I've done input/output bearings on this style diff for my cobra. It will be interesting to split the actual diff this time.

Differential advice

Advice please. I've come to look at the diff and surprised at the amount of iron filing centred around the drain plug. To those who are far more experienced in stripping these than me, what could you typically expect from a 60 year old differential. The crown drive looks good although I've not check...

Re: Where do these fit

They're rubber. They look like the rubber suckers you used to get on the ends of a childs arrow, from a bow and arrow set.. I was wondering if they were to stop the glass rattling in the door frame but can't see where they'd be used. I'll have a closer look at the winder to see if/how they fit there...

Where do these fit

I found these in a box marked "doors" along with some window frame spacers. I've checked the manuals and can't see where they fit.

All ideas appreciated.

Thanks
