Re: Registration in Italy rejected - EEC-homologation - help wanted

1/ I'd guess the Swiss and Germans will also join you and howl in complaint as I have seen new replacement Lucas s2/s3 front lenses supplied in Lucas boxes without the E11 markings. Any time I get enquiries from German or Swiss drivers, I always make sure they are supplied e11 marked lenses. kind re...

Re: New clutch and thrust bearing

It's Rory who's doing the drawings, not me. The top and bottom drawings are completely separate from each other. The distance represented by the first " * " has nothing to do with the second " * ". He's just saying "measure this". In the first case, we are simply trying to ascertain what the height ...

Re: New clutch and thrust bearing

If there are that many variations, then it makes sense that people start taking measurements. I'd suggest a standard way to do this:- turn a brand yet to be fitted example upside down and with the carbon face down, measure the height to the centre line of the pivot. Clearly a new example of the one ...

Re: Smart chargers

I have a Halfords charger. I hooked it up to a voltmeter and ammeter to see what it was doing. Essentially it starts by "hunting" for a charge voltage where it can put full charge (a lowly ~4amps or maybe less iirc) and then slowly zig-zags up and down a bit but this is superimposed over a staircase...

Re: Altenator and Ignition light

Dear Anon, Bulbs blow because too much current passes through them. It's happened twice, so you need to work out how you can draw such a large current. Current drawn is inversely proportional to the resistance in a circuit. Logic says you will find a short circuit to earth somewhere. The bulb lights...

Re: What can be done about the low exhaust....

You can bend the ears/loops of the hangers to more closely go where you need them to.... so long as there is enough "give" to let the rubber rings still loop over the ends. This is how you fit the rubbers:- https://www.jag-lovers.org/snaps/snap_view.php3?id=1428865711 Other useful odds and sods in s...

Re: What can be done about the low exhaust....

There are a number of strategies and none of them are great. Firstly, you can fit spacers under the rear springs to increase the distances between the perches. This will set your rear ride height slightly higher. Secondly, if you undo all of the clamps between the various exhaust components, you can...

Re: Ignition issue on my serie 3 1972

Firstly you should download the wiring diagram for your car and use it as a reference. The blue Repair and Operations manual has the relevant tests listed. 86.35.29/2 states 4-6volts for the coil positive, so it suggests your wiring can still improve, as you have gone from 3.7 to 4.5v. The ignition ...

Re: Ignition issue on my serie 3 1972

With such a low voltage on the coil, what you seem to be telling us is that you are not charging the coil. That means there is too high a resistance in the path to/from the coil. The manual tells you what the resistances ought to be across the ballast connections and you can check these. I would che...

Re: Horn push not working

...However I cannot fathom where the horn push should be earthed to. The horn push, when pressed, will contact the steering column. The steering column is bolted to the chassis. The chassis is connected to the battery negative. The horn push thus completes the earth side of the horn relay winding c...

Re: Worst plugs ever seen?

All of the orange stuff looks pretty external, so I'd also be relatively relaxed about that. If you are on choke for a long time, it implies some of the carburettors are too lean at low load. If the plugs are sooty and it isn't after a nice long run, then that may also be from your choke enrichment....

Re: Upper Steering Column Ser3

I did notice when on bench the live feed clip /holder C29320 had moved and was touching body of column. Dear Max, the body of the column is bolted into the chassis, so it is permanently earthed. Your so-called "live feed" is actually the earth side of the horn relay winding. (It's the other relay w...

Re: Weird electrical issue

Dear John, 1/ A graph of voltage versus current for LEDs shows they are a straight line relationship. Current is always controlled by limiting the voltage. It's usually done with an inline feedback resistor. You seem to have forgotten that the alternator limits the voltage to start with. 2/ Now read...

Re: Vacuum servo - air leak across diaphragm

Two points:- 1/ You didn't report a horribly heavy brake pedal, so one presumes the booster was working. So long as the engine is running and you don't have the throttle mostly (or wide) open at low rpm or completely open at higher rpm, any loss of vacuum will be continuously replenished. 2/ If ther...

Re: Instrument Light Push-In Bulb Holders ?

What was wrong with the old bulb holders? If you aren't reusing the old loom, then all you need to do is snip them off and attach male Lucar spades to the pigtails. To use the smaller (new) holders, you'd have to fab up a sleeve for each. Earthing is via the chassis. For LEDs, you need much stronger...

Re: v12 stromberg jet size

Have you considered that the brass jets may be worn after 50 years and so may now be a wider hole? This would make it run rich as would a worn needle. Measure them. The needles are all published sizes in the Stromberg manual and the the jet diameter will also be published somewhere. kind regards Marek

Not that you are going to get an answer from a dead thread, but if this admission means the clutch slave cylinder could move about, then it probably wasn't fully disengaging the clutch, was it?

Re: Weird electrical issue

As others have already pointed out, the obvious answer is often the right answer:- I'd measure the resistance across the brake switch and then apply the brakes. It should go from infinity straight to less than one ohm. Multimeters generally can't measure anything lower than that but the reading shou...
