I first used Norwich Union and with agreed value and limited mileage it was ?1200 p.a. Clean licence, no accidents. Each year they added more conditions - "thou shalt not go on rallies, club days, travel with more than two vehicles, no Nurburgring etc etc". I went to Footman James and with an agreed...

But ........ the lack of number plates could be a problem. You could get away with it on the front but need something to show at the rear. Know anyone who can let you borrow trade plates? Otherwise you may have to trailer it there.

Bollocks! You are legal and covered to drive if you have a booked appointment at an MOT centre. It is very unlikely your Insurance company would decline to cover you in the event of an accident unless they could prove the car was not roadworthy at the time and it materially affected the outcome, and...

The gauge is fine if it goes to 60psi (100psi if you have a VSE 02) and the fittings are BSP so I see no problems. As Dave Rawle suggests the ultimate test is to connect it to an air line and compare readings. Many British cars from the 60's had Smiths mechanical gauges and it is easy to swap bezels...

Well done Angus, clearly the way to do it! My M&C Wilkinson suggestion was for those who need a quick fix and do not have the time, knowledge and resources to track down the necessary bits. Where did you get the gauge from?

Personally I would strip the wood and varnish it 'au naturel' or search eBay for a kit or good original wheel. There is an early one here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... 0420088410 - depends on how you value your time and chemicals!

Adam There were two types of steering wheel. The early cars had a Coventry Timber Bending Co Ltd steering wheel with a round beech wood (blond in colour as seen on the iconic brochure cover) and the alloy rim exposed on the inside. Later cars had a mahogany coloured wood wheel with a thumb groove al...

The JEC one works very well and is reliable. A mechanical gauge from M&C Wilkinson will be about ?140. Go with the JEC unless you are wedded to the idea of a mechanical gauge.

Mark A lump of clay which you knead into a flat pad. Spray the paintwork with a lubricant (soapy water or Meguiers Quick Detailer spray) and simply rub the clay back and forth. It is non abrasive but 'grabs' anything stuck to the surface (pollen, grit, sap etc) and holds it. Just keep kneading the c...

Harry I am just getting over the shame of actually 'valeting' the car without getting sucked deeper into the detailing world. I did rub my (bare) hand over the paintwork before and after and that pretty much told me all I needed to know. For water filtration I use a cartridge system supplied by Ioni...

Car Cleaning

In preparation for our upcoming tour of France I decided to 'valet' the E-Type. Like many people I have several shelves of legacy cleaning products bought with the best of intentions or given as presents. All I have ever managed in the past was a quick wash, rinse and leather. This is how I got on 1...

Andy Could have been vaporisation if the fans were not working but unlikely to be so otherwise - the weather is not that hot. You could try running the car without the air filter canister which will have the effect of making the mixture richer - no harm will come of it and it may give us a guide (it...

Tony I have had some correspondence with Chuffer (Ray) on this subject and his reply was as follows: "This is an interesting one isn't it? Firstly let me say that many different filter head units were used on the XK engine during its life, so many that I have 8 gaskets left over in my gasket set, al...

Yes, they were pretty well my 'buts' too. Its value lies in its low mileage and originality - use it and you lose it, along with a shed load of cash. My wife also pointed out we would not be able to tour in it, it would not go like a scalded cat as ours does and the colour is not to our taste. I als...

Going back to where this discussion started I really think you should have a go in a 4.2. Once you are out of first gear the driving experience is pretty much the same. I have been seriously considering buying that red 3.8 OTS from Eagle - it checks all the boxes in terms of originality (the paint e...
