#1 New member - FHC 1969 Cream white

Post by Fredrik1 » Sun Sep 19, 2021 6:47 pm

Hi there! I pulled the E-type project into the garage yesterday. The next couple of weeks I will have a lot to do in order to make the garage usable again - 5 motorcycles were having a reasonably ok time until the new friend moved in with the engine in a box on the side... Either way, I am new to the Jaguar world, despite having spent a lot of time the past couple of years looking for XJS' and trying to figure out what to build. I can't let stuff remain the way it was once produced, it's a decease... Hence it made sense to purchase a project E-type, missing the right engine, the gearbox, working brakes, seats, electrics etc. A sound car, some rust, but on a level that can be handled. My youngest son gave me three years to have it fixed as he would like a ride in it from his high school graduation :smile:

Today, having bought a large box of rust penetration oil, I made a less fun finding. My intention was to run it fixed underneath, but keeping the patina-paint on top for some time. In front of the windshield I found a small chip in the paint. It gave me the feeling of bare metal underneath... Strange. Picking a little bit more with a knife and the paint just cracked away. No primer at all. Hm. Too much beer a Monday morning 1969? Has anyone else had a similar experience?

I have plenty more questions but will ask in due time.

//Fredrik

I should have written rust penetration oil - require plenty of that! But, paint-wise, has any of you experienced as bad paint as I tried to describe? No primer at all??

Hi...iv seen plenty of cars like yours with bad paint flaking off and rust underneath......dont think it made a difference if a primer coat or not was applied.....iv never looked that close to what was done or not 50 years ago....Steve

Thanks! Doesn't matter now but it requires a full body paint - my initial thought was to run it with a rough patina look for a few years, spreading that cost somewhat. Well, well...

Hi!

Huddinge just south of Stockholm. I did one of my officer training summers in Eksjo (combat engineer, Ing2) so I have been there x number of times. Many years ago now though... The new friend is getting dismantled little by little every day. Considering the amount of rust, I am happy with that approach, giving the rust penetration oil plenty of time!

Thanks for the welcome!
