Hello everyone, I am pleased to join the forum and gain knowledge from all you experts on all things e type.
I own an original 1969 right hand drive S2 fixed head coupe in silver which I am preparing ready for the Donington festival at the end of April and hope to meet several members there.
I have read several articles on electric power steering and quick release steering wheels and wondered if anyone has any suggestions on the best options without spending a fortune?

John, welcome to the best place for all things E Type. How long have you owned the car? As for power steering and removable steering wheel, search on here and you’ll find lots of comments. A crook lock or similar can do a good job for you and if you’re a newish owner, have you really found the steering heavy? Or just comparing it with a modern car? After all part of the enjoyment of an E is in old fashioned style of motoring.

Many thanks for the replies. I have only owned the car since August after constant encouragement from my 2 sons. Very pleased so far, mods include MT75 box new diff rebuilt carbs high lift cams etc. Needs a good run when weather improves. Will look out web link . Thanks

I hope the fitting of that gearbox did not need any cutting into bodywork. If the cross member has been cut then you’ve affected the integrity of the car’s structure. As I said if you’re comparing your E with a modern car for power steering, brakes, etc. then stop now. It is a sixty year old design and should be accepted as that. Yes, experienced restorers have fitted power steering, often for the benefit of lady drivers. But it takes away some of the E Type’s character. If you look at upgrades that are well worth doing they include brake light switch, headlamps via a relay, led lighting, though be careful about doing anything to the headlights as that can compromise the MOT.

Yes Geoff thanks for the reply. We have a very good 2 post lift here on the farm and have given the car a good inspection so no cutting evident. Power steering is something I thought about but not made my mind up as pretty expensive unless one goes down the alternative scrapyard route which doesn’t appeal much as lot of research needed.

Hi John,
Welcome to to the forum, sounds like you have a lovely FHC!
Are you based local to Donington? I am South Derbyshire based, my friend Richard Eaton runs a lot of the Derbyshire-based E-Type Club events (you don't need to be a member to attend) and of course we do a lot with Jonathan and Anne who run the East Midlands section.
Do keep an eye out for anything we do as well (usually our "High Peak Run" is in July/August, details TBC soon), and we may well be at Donington too.

I will be going to Donington on the Sunday so will look forward to meeting a few members there, I believe a few members have fitted power steering from donor cars and wondered what there experience has been I.e. from Vauxhall corsas etc. Would love to hear back from anyone who has fitted one. Guess a lot easier to fit an EZ steer unit but quite expensive.

John, why this need for power steering? If it’s properly set up for camber and castor then it’s only when manoeuvring at slow speed that the steering can be classed as heavy, by modern standards. Mine is nicely set up and I barely notice any heaviness, especially once moving above 100mph. Perhaps start by having your steering checked by someone who has the kit for wire wheels? And if you’ve got tyres fatter than the standard 185s then junk them first.
You could speak to Ken Jenkins or Ken Verity, both are listed on this forum. They could check your steering and suspension settings. Not a million miles from you.

My friend Richard fitted the EZ power steering kit to the 4.2 S1 he sold a few years ago, I could find out if there were any issues with it/tips for such a conversion. Never heard of anyone using Corsa bits before now.
If you're after technical advice, +woudl also recommend you speaking with Paul Brown of Paul Brown Classic Jaguar (Ripley, Derbyshire) who is a font of E-type knowledge and a thoroughly nice chap.
