Hi all. Just introducing myself as the proud new owner of a S1 2+2 bought from a club member in Spain. She's yet to arrive in the UK and is in fairly good condition rust wise having been stored for the last 20 years. She is missing a few bits at the front end but could be put together fairly easily to get her running. (I'm sure those words have come to haunt many a restorer before!)
I'm undecided whether to get her up and running (for a year or so) and then commence a nut and bolt resto or whether to dive in straight away? I do have a couple of other projects I should have been getting on with but the e-type became available at a price I couldn't refuse so I delved in.
I'm yet to import her so if anyone can give any advice on clearing agents I'd be grateful. Also whether anybody can shed light on my VAT liability, again I would be obliged. The car is an original UK matching numbers car which was supplied to Byatts of Fenton in Stoke on Trent in 1966. Does a Heritage Certificate demonstrate proof that VAT must have been paid at the time???
Anyway, all very dull stuff but I look forward to meeting you and your cars.

Welcome Roy. There won't be any VAT to pay as Spain is part of the EU.
I would get the car running and use it before stripping it down. That way you will get to know the car and decide if you like it and also what upgrades you want to incorporate with any subsequent restoration.
Can't help with any shipping agents but all you need is a company that transports cars.

If you're feeling adventurous go & collect it yourself with one of these...

I've used them a few times. The trucks are a little agricultural but they're really easy to drive & are a safer means of transporting than a trailer.

If your car is in decent condition take care in choosing a transport company. They will cosign local pickups and who knows how they cater to very low-sitting E-Types. How will they tow it onto their trailer? Where will they hook the towing rope? I've had my OTS messed up with guys like this but it didn't matter much because it was very scruffy anyway, I would be more careful now though.
I like Neil's proposal of picking it up yourself. You will learn a lot. It might be something like a hunter dragging his kill out of the forest, and not like your everyday online purchase.
Get it running first thing. It will boost moral and let you make better decisions going forward.

It's being shipped over from Spain, and the vendor is overseeing the collection by the shipping company. He seems a passionate Jaguar enthusiast, heading up his local club and has 12 Jags of his own. I'm happy enough to collect it myself but I'm a little daunted by the clearing process which is alien to me. I suppose the easy way to become comfortable with the process is to dive in and learn!!!!!!
I'm sold on the idea of getting her up and running first of all and performing a very light resto so she can be driven. Having been laid up for 20 years will have taken its toll!
She has a new fibreglass front end which I'll use for now, and she's missing all of the front end bright work. I think it will be a case of pulling her together and putting a bit of lipstick on her to tidy her up and enjoying her for a year. I'll carry out the remedial body work and spraying for the time being! If I'm quick enough, I may have her ready for my upcoming wedding in December to leave the church in

The interior is a mish-mash of red and tan so I'll opt for one of those colours for now.
Once the full resto is underway, I'll consider the upgrades and have her painted by a professional. Being a lawyer means I'll probably be harassing you guys for 'know how' as i don't have an engineering background so am internet self-taught. I think I'll take the plunge and document the resto, probably embarrassing myself in the process.
She's currently red (and white gel coat bonnet) but I discovered through Jahuar Heritage that the original colour is gold which presents another dilemma. As a matching numbers car, do I keep her original or do I paint her a colour that I like? I must say I'm not a fan of gold but fear I may be forcing myself to like it to justify the originality. I read a past thread of a guy who had the same dilemma. Perhaps I should attend a few outings and see some gold cars up close and personal?
I've got a couple of kit builds under my belt and a couple of light restos but this will be bar far the biggest restoration project I've undertaken but I'm looking forward to it!!!!

I would go for the colour you like best and not worry to much about originality. At the end of the day you bought the car to enjoy and the effect of any colour should not effect the value to much should you wish to sell at a later date. Not suggesting you are concerned about value but more of keeping the car as original as possible. Just my view, others may feel different.

Hi Roy,
The collection process is pretty easy. There should be an agent handling the arrival at the docks (Southampton ?). Your shipper will probably sort this for you as they will typically use their regular option. If it's RORO then the agent will extract the vehicle from the ship and store on/near docks until you're ready to collect. If it's container then they arrange for the container to be collected & moved to somewhere the car can be offloaded (needs somewhere with container ramp facilities) and stored until you're ready to collect. Else they can also arrange delivery. For both options there are additional charges (my last container shipment was circa ?700). The agent should also handle all the paperwork for you and should also be able to arrange the NOVA application if you require them to do so.

On car colour, I didnt know how much it would devalue the car? If it won't make too much of a difference I think I am likely to lean towards my personal preference.

Have you looked to see if the vin is listed on www.xkedata.com? If not, put it on there with the nearly 18.000 other E-types recorded.

Just to say congrats on the car.
I am also in the same dilemma about keeping red or going back to Golden Sand. There are some photos on my restoration thread where you can compare the two colours.
My 2+2 is in the paint shop and will be worked on over the winter so I have to make a decision pretty soon. Everyone on the forum and who I have spoken to says go back to Golden Sand which is probably where I will end up. But at the end of the day it is your car so you can have the colour you want.
I am based up in Thame Ditton, not far from you, and the Car is in the paint shop in East Molesley so you are welcome to come and see the car once it is repainted.
