Hi Ian,

No response from the guy about containers - he may be on leave or away from home base.

With reference to the A/C pack, Glenn Olsen is marketing an A/C conversion, though I don't know much about it. He has a very solid reputation however, try this link:

http://www.jagetyperesto.com.au/body_builds.htm

As to the "sliding rear seat", all 2+2s have one, although it isn't a sliding seat so much as one where the upper rear pivots up, forward and down again to give luggage space only dreamed of by thoe with lesser FHC and OTS cars :D .

I also agree with the decision to ship rather than drive, especially across the Nullarbor, without A/C, in summer, in a car you don't know...... etc.

For photo posting you need a Photobucket account, all very simple when you know how, there is a post on the "Knowledge base" part of the forum detailing how to get one and how to use it. All very helpful when you want to ask a question or prove a point, especially as the (free) account allows you to upload fairly good quality photos to the forum. Also take a look at the post of manuals and related data as the parts and workshop manuals are on there along with much better wiring diagrams than Jaguar supplied. Sadly the Series 2 workshop manual is not illustrated - there is an illustrated version available somewhere, but it is expensive and not original, although supposedly excellent.

The car looks wonderful and I wish you all the best,

Regards,

Hi Simon,

Thanks for trying to get in touch with transport guy, we have made enquiries and we may be on to someone that will deliver direct from Perth to Brisbane using a container.

Thanks for the AC tip I will follow it up.

The Series III we looked at in Queensland was a fixed rear seat (or as you say the top part). When I looked it up in the workshop manual it indicated that some Australian and Canadian exports had a fixed rear seat, instead of the up and over type hinge, that?s why I was keener on the E Type in Perth

I have had a look at the parts and workshop manuals and the information is excellent and very helpful.

I will have a look at the Photobucket as I feel I may need it to get help later.

Thanks for the support.
Ian

Well, you learn something new every day!

I have had a reply re: container shipping, my friend sent a rather contradictory reply "recommending" CEVA-Vehicle Logistics. I include the text he sent here so you can draw your own conclusions....

"Whilst CEVA completely screwed my car to Perth because they shipped it soaking wet in an unventilated container, and then completely failed to acknowledge any responsibility in the resulting massive corrosion, they did provide excellent service and costs from Perth. Perth is hot and dry this time of year and your friend should have no problems."

As you can see, a "recommendation" which is rather double edged, but is food for thought.

Hope all goes well and look forward to hearing from you soon.

Regards,

#24 It was meant to be....

Post by Downunda » Fri Jan 27, 2012 11:43 am

We have sorted out the transport of my E Type from Perth, so it should be arriving on the 8th of February.

Today I visiting the local dump after cleaning out the garage to make sure the new arrival would be completely comfortable. When I was there I saw a single engine laying in the dirt, believe it or not it was a Jaguar engine. This is probably not unusual if it was in England but to find a complete Jaguar engine sitting in a rubbish dump in Australia is probably not a common occurrence.

This is a recycle rubbish dump so after knocking the price down by $10 I gave him the $50 and was on my way.

It turns over and appears to have compression, but I am just interested to find out a bit more about the engine. I am hoping to use it for not only possible spares but also for learning more about the engine.

I have the engine number (P41300E) and the head number(W815). I have checked on the usual sites to find a reference to this number and I could not find it. If anyone can please help me to find out more about this engine it would be appreciated.
Thanks
Ian

The cylinder head number is merely a casting number and has no significance. I suspect that the P number is also a casting number. The engine is almost certainly a late Series 3 4.2 litre XJ6 engine of the 8L series. These are easily recognisable by the ribs running vertically down each side of the core plugs. I say "almost certainly" because I am not sure whether the very late 3.4 litre engines fitted to XJ6s also had ribs . The engine number should either be stamped on the left hand bellhousing flange , or on the block adjacent to the oil filter adaptor

P.S. looking at the picture again, I am sure it is an 8L as there appears to be a fuel injection manifold on it

I think the engine number should be stamped on the top of the filter housing on the middle of the inlet side of the block just above the sump - it looks like it is covered by whte tape or something to keep the filter aperture covered in the picture. That's certainly where the engine number is on earlier XK blocks.

#27 v12 engine

Post by jonhall88 » Tue Jan 31, 2012 12:07 am

I have had my ser 3 for some 6 months now and at first the engine does seem daunting due to the size. The biggest problem for home diy is removing the unit from the car. At the end of the day it has 12 cylinders but that does not make more diffulcult to work on than a 4 cylinder car just more of everything (just about) mine will be coming out next xmas to cure a few problem oil leaks (nothing major) and I will do the clutch at the same time. Main reason is to replace water / hydraulic hoses and to clean and polish engine and bay
Apart from that servicing is a doddle.
I actually prefer the more beefy lines on the ser 3 than on the 1 & 2 also the extra room, door size , power steering for me makes it a much better car (my opinion only) Certainly there are some better points on the earlier car (my biggest regret is having the tacky switches) but the torque on the manual box is superb and is a pleasure to drive. Dont get me wrong if I had the money then I would have a lightweight or even better a c type but the lottery needs to come in first.
PS I use the car weekly and love it to bits, if you are 20 ish, have money and a puppy labrador buy one, best pulling machine ever made (wish I had one when I was 20)

#28 Very Happy

Post by Downunda » Fri Feb 10, 2012 10:46 pm

I have been told I will need the smile surgically removed from my face now. :D

My E type has arrived, it has been a very nervous week. The floods down south made the trip longer. When I went to pick it up I was horrified to see a forklift running around it to load containers. So I jumped in as quick as I could to get on my way, as I turned the ignition on one of Brisbane massive storms hit, needless to say it was an extremely stressful drive home in the rush hour with a number of stops on the way to wait for it to clear.

Now very happy and starting to have a good look over it, if anyone knows where I can get the old style spade connector clear covers, it would be welcome, as I need to fix up some of the wiring.

Thanks
Ian

Hi Ian

Congratulations!!! Hope the car is all you hoped.

I remember the stress of picking up from a container very well, fortunately my story was a happy one too, although, like your car, mine got wet for the first time on the way home (albeit on a Trailer through the Rush hour).

For all things electrical it is difficult to go past these guys:

http://www.autosparks.co.uk/

With online ordering and an extensive catalogue you should find what you are looking for. They supplied most of the wiring loom for my car (although whilst I was still in UK) and I still order from them today. The covers you are looking for should be cheap enough to post.

There are Aussie suppliers, but I haven't tried them - the sites weren't as good, prices more expensive and when I looked at least, there was no online ordering facility.

Best of look and welcome to ownership!

Regards,

Simon

Jaycar ought to have the covered spade connectors, and I have managed to buy "waterproof" ones in the past from boat supply places.
WRT getting parts, I have essentially given up trying to buy parts locally. As I alluded to in my earlier post the markup on parts here is simply astronomical, and availability is patchy, along with the knowledge of the suppliers.
I have spent the best part of $25k on parts in the last 6 months and have sourced virtually all of them from the UK (SNG Barratts mostly).
Can you take some pics and put them up on Flickr or somewhere so we can have a look at the old girl?

One of many on line photo sharing sites. I have used it; it is simple and comes with software that just does all the work for you.
