The 'E' Type Forum

Hi there all, my name is Garry and I have stumbled across this forum.

I have a 1971 series 3 OTS that I bought in the UK in 1982 when I lived there. The car has been in Australia since early 1984.

The car has been on and off road the road during my ownership but has been off the road for the last 10 years. The car was originally black with auto but I am in the process of changing the colour to signal red. I have also converted it to a 5 speed using a getrag 5 speed out of a Holden Commodore 5 Litre V8 - the car runs OK with the box but the overall conversion is not complete so I do not know whether ultimately it will be successful.

At present the car is under a pile of junk and stripped - see pics.

Hi Gary and welcome.

When I joined this forum over a year ago, I had two stalled projects and needed a shot of enthusiasm....and I've got it! Both cars are now up and running, and both very close to being put back on the road...one of them for the first time in nearly 40 years.

I hope you find the same and get that S3 painted and back together soon. You have some superb roads just made for an E type around your area, with perfect mountain, forest and coastal areas to explore with the top down.

Thanks for the welcome - unfortunately I have a non jaguar project on the go which is the priority at the moment.



When this gets completed it will be onto the jag.

As far as the local climate goes and the top down - great in the twilight but the sun is just too hot during the day and generally I have to drive with the top up to stop getting roasted - but then I get basted inside the car. I wish RHD cars had aircon as original equipment - I do not like aftermarket setups so I will be looking at fitting a home made system that uses the LHD vents etc - some cutting and plastic welding might be required.

My car is number 11 and is the earliest series 3 OTS in Aust and one of the earliest series 3s in Aust. Locally we have one of the series 3 prototypes with the ex VIN number. It is in the front of this pic and my car is the second one next to it.

Hi Garry and welcome to the forum. Its funny isn't it that some of us have such similar tastes in vehicles. You would think that an E-type and a 101 would attract completely different types of owners, but it's nice to see i'm not the only one!

I used to be the 101 FCC&R chairman for a few years. I don't know if you know a guy called Anthony Johnson in Oz but he used to live near me years ago when he still lived in the UK. If you do you will know he is into 101's too. Haven't spoke to him in a long time, but if you do, please say hello from me.

Just looking at your 101 again, it looks like it was fitted with the winch fairlead on the front bumper in the past, which leads me to conclude this may have been one of the Australian forces Rapier Missile tractors supplied by BAE. It also looks as though there is some kind of hard cover over the top of the canvas?

Thanks for the additional welcomes. Echezeaux - Perth is nearly as far`away as the UK - probably will not get there in the e-type but when the Landy 101 is back on the road I might make it in it.

Ian - nice looking e-type and 101:D . Yep my 101 is one of the 50 Australian 101 Rapier Tractors and is complete. I will send you a PM.

Edit - Ian I sent you a PM but it stayed in my outbox and hasn't migrated to my sent box so I do not know if it actually went - I sent a backup but the same happened. So you will either get 1 x PM or 2x PMs.

Hi Garry,
I know this is a very old post and things many have changed, however, I thought we had a bit in common, so I thought I'd see if you were interested!
I too have a Series III, also fairly early - it is the 97th RHD 2+2, also bought in UK and also one I have brought with me to Australia, I am still restoring it, very nearly finished now and I have also fitted a Getrag Gearbox, though I am not sure of where it came from originally, possibly an XJS and almost certainly not a Holden as I bought it in UK. I have made my own linkage for the gearchange, which seems to have worked, I can send photos if it would help. Finally, I too once owned an old ex-military Land Rover, although in my case it was a Lightweight Series 2/3 (I believe they were a combination of both series 2 and 3). So you see, quite a lot in common!
Hope your car has progressed in recent months and you will be on the road soon.
