The 'E' Type Forum

Hi I have been asked by a friend, who has a 1970 Series 2 softtop, to help her understand what she would expect to get for the car if she put it on the market. Her husband died a few years ago and she has only done 200 miles in the car over the last 6 years.

The car is totally original and unrestored. She has had the car since 1992 and it has been fully maintained ever since. I am not knowledgeable when it comes to E types and am not sure what I should be looking for in relation to condition. What I can say is the car has very nominal rust, a few small bubbles on the top of the off side front wing and that's about it. The seats are well worn but not split of torn. The car does not have spoked wheels but has etype chrome hub caps. The soft top is original and in good condition. The carpet in the drivers side foot well is work out. All other carpets look their age but are in good condition, including the one in the boot. The windscreen looks as if it has a haze on it on the lower quarter near side and top edge on the offside.

So the question is, what would she expect to get for it if she was to put it on the market realistically. She is adamant that if she sells it, it must go to someone who will keep it and cherish it, so no dealers.

Hi. There have been a few requests of late for valuations...the short answer is that without seeing the car it is not possible to provide a value. Hagerty Insurance in the UK have a valuation tool here.

A good SII roadster is around £60k and an excellent around £90k for the purposes of insurance on their site. It does not mean that is what you will get if the car is sold.

Your best bet would be to get an independent valuer to assess the car and then he or she will be able to provide a realistic sale price.

Once you have established the price you can advertise it within these pages but forum rules dictate that any car/parts offered for sale here must have a price.

Hi.....have a look at ebay, carand classic, cars for sale......etc and look at similar models for a good idea of value, but £60k+ is a good start

There are people on here who could give you an honest appraisal by viewing the car and could then advise a way to sell, whether at auction or as suggested above on here. And you could be pretty certain that you'd get an sensible price to post on here and get a genuine enthusiast to buy the car.

Tell us which part of the country you are and someone local could pm you to perhaps view and help.
There is a reputable, professional restorer on here also. He might be the best bet to contact, though I'll let him contact you by pm is he's interested.

Keep us aware of what you do so we can try to help keep the wrong people away.

Not really! I am going to introduce myself on the forum as soon as I get a chance,I'm a private individual I dont own an E Type but am looking for one in the next few months hence the PM. Still trying to absorb lots of info on choosing an E Type as I am until now Porsche driver and really lack knowledge of E Types other than " I want one!" Feedback so far is "take your time"! Looking at values, the 911 will have to go!

You'll miss the 911 when it's gone. I did. Want it back.

We still have our 911 (993) but it has done less miles than our E-Type since 1999. Porsche has always been a favourite but the sheer joy on people's faces when they see the E-Type can't be beat. We did a trip to Normandy in the E-Type along with friends in their 911 turbo and they could not understand why everyone waved at us and sneered at them. Still love the 911 but the E-Type has 'presence'; young kids shout look "it's an E-Type" which they never do with the 911.

I have yet to have the pleasure of driving my E Type and look forward to doing so although I have other classics and have experienced that reaction from other people.

I sold my 911 (996 Carerra 2) because I just didn't use it enough. That doesn't stop me missing it, though. They are exceptionally good cars. I didn't buy it to impress others but because it's a driver's car. I know I don't need to tell you that, though.

I'm not suggesting he keeps the 911 in preference to the E Type. He definitely should get one but it would be nice to have both, if possible.

My friend has a 1967 911 and he gets plenty of respect from others. I suppose it's more​ like apparent wealth resentment on the later cars than anything else. Tall Poppy syndrome.

I think it is more the case that German cars are viewed in France with a good deal of disfavour. I can't imagine why......
