The 'E' Type Forum

Morning
Well, I have finally done it and moved into the world of E type ownership.
And of course joined the club.
Yet to get my hands on my car - I imported it from Durban and it is still with the shipping company but expect to get my hands on it later next week.
So - my first question- with whom would you suggest I insure it?
Secondly - oil and coolant change at the top of my agenda - any recommendations here as to type of oil and coolant.
It is a series 1 4.2.

Ps Thoughts on who I should use to fit an alarm and or mobiliser would be gratefully received also.

Insurance...any of the classic specialists. Lancaster. Peter James. Pete Best. Carole Nash, Footman James. Arian Flux....there are others....phone around for a quote. You will need at least four pictures for the insurance and probably and independent valuation too...any of the Jaguar clubs can assist. Make sure your insurance is appropriate for you.
Coolant. Bluecol ethylene glycol based....don't use an oat or poat based modern coolant.
Oil. Any good quality 20/50 sae multi grade...check out the classic oils people at Bicester...they do a range.
There are many threads on here about security. Alarm...I would not bother..secret kill switches, a disklok maybe...and fit some sort of tracker....or get one fitted. Suggest you peruse the many threads.

Hi and welcome! I use castrol classic 20/50; bought the last lot on line. Obviously, you don't want modern synthetics. Halfords do a "classic 20/50" as well which I previously used. For insurance, any of the above; although I now use Admiral multi-car! Cheap, answer the phone, (eventually!) easy for an agreed valuation. And on multicar, they stagger the insurance start times first time you insure, with varied periods, so that on renewal they all renew at the same time. I like just thinking about matters, and getting comparison quotes, just once a year at the same time for all cars.

Peter, welcome! Lots of useful info and help here as I'm sure you've worked out. I use Millers classic oil, and have insured like Malcolm with Admiral on a multi-car.

I've recently changed a single modern car to a multi car with Admiral and also had my house insured with them. They gave me discounts on both cars, give my wife a full no-claims on her new car (she was always on my or other insurance) and gave me a discount on house insurance whilst upgrading the policy! Took half an hour but was very cost-effective.

I shied away from putting the E on it as I felt it needed a specialist insurer and thought it would flummox a regular insurer. I use Heritage. How was Admiral with insuring a vintage car, any hassles, guaranteed value, etc.? Would welcome feedback as I wouldn't mind keeping it all with one insurer for less hassle.

Welcome to the forum. I'm just waiting my first e-type coming in from The States. How exciting is the prospect ?!

Please could you stick up some pics once yours arrives.

As for insurance, I've got a mark 2 which is on with Lancaster, but is going over to Admiral with a recent multi car policy. I have been very impressed with how Admiral have been, but I think you only know how good an insurer is when you have to (God forbid) make a claim.

Yep - it is an exciting time - I'll be seeing mine later today for the first time since I purchased it. It is with Shipmycar in Milton Keynes.
Spent around 6 weeks researching it before jumping on a plane for a day trip to Durban in late March. I hope that the DVLA will provide me with a number later this week then it will finally be back living around 10 miles from where it was built.
Will put somemore pics later but for now here it is.
When does yours arrive and who did you use for shipping?

John, no hassle putting the E on the multi-car with Admiral. They had a routine for agreed value, simpler than adrian Flux who i used before, issued me with an agreed value certificate, no problems really.

Check that all you imported is present and correct & if you have an MOT done as part of the process please check that it is 100% ?

Mine is coming in from New Hampshire via the garage I bought it from (sight unseen) delivering it to New Jersey, the onwards to Felixstowe. I'm using Kingstown, who are a Hull based outfit, as I was hoping to get it up here, closer to Ampleforth where I live.

I'm just waiting for title to clear as it is being bought from the PO's estate, as he died in autumn. It should be near enough ready to go any day soon, then it'll be 4 weeks to make the journey across the Atlantic. Cannot wait.

Have you got your list of improvements yet ?

List of improvements - Ha! Now the budget gets to be busted!
New set of tyres- not really needed but better be sure.
Lumention ignition. Fitted same to my Stag about 30 years ago and it has been perfect.
Period radio perhaps.
New header tank - suspect the current one has a leak on one of the weld seams.
And a tracker and some kind of anti theft device - it's a bit scary to read about the one that was stolen at Donnington recently.
Longer term? Upgraded brakes I suspect- modern cars show just how much things have progressed in that department.
Good luck with yours. Be sure to get the name of the vessel it is sailing on then you can track its progress across the Atlantic.
Not sure what your shipping company is like but I have been reasonably impressed with Shipmycar.
Only issue is the length of time DVLA takes. They won't issue a reg number until the car has an MOT..... and they quote 4 to 6 weeks although I am told it is more likely 2 to 3 weeks. Patience needed.

Don't be alarmed by the heading - just for attention. Read on.

I am intrigued by the timing, and the atypical direction of travel of your stunning car. I am in SA. From early this year, I started seriously looking for a series 1 4.2. There was, as far as I could ascertain, nothing available locally, and I was even looking at some really good ones in the UK, but learnt that with duties, ad valorem, VAT and shipping, we end up paying almost double the UK price here (and that's with an exchange rate about 3 times worse than the Big Mac index suggests it ought to be). And you need to go to the UK to look at the thing first. Our club guys said I was 4th on a list looking for series 1 4.2s. There was a series 2 ready to go, and a series 1.5 almost done. I have ended up with a 3.8 (into which I am having the original Mossbox refitted). I don't have her yet, despite buying in March, as there was much I wanted restored to original (like steering wheel and 5" wheels) and am waiting for parts to come from your valley thisaway, including having a full retrim done (yes, ouch).

Do you pay duties for cars brought from SA? At least SNGB is local to you. For us, the moment something goes wrong, you have to wait for the ships. Especially if, like me, you ain't no McGyver.

If you don't mind telling, was yours available and advertised in SA early this year? If so, I would have missed it. And then you would have been my unknown rival for the (unascertained but available) opportunity! Mine is red too, by the way (it was originally opalescent maroon). I am having the original beige trim done, coming from Aldridges.

Would love to hear how your baby gets on in the months ahead. I am also relatively new to this forum - joined when I was burningly curious and anxious about all sorts of questions I had about my soon to be acquired lovely.
