I have been a member of this forum for a few months now and I thought I should introduce myself.

I have been a Jag fan even as a small child as my father owned a Mk10 (now mine ) and series 1 XJ. He used to tell me about a time when he nearly bought a v12 E-type and what a machine they were. I must have been around 10 years old and my dad was selling a rough looking series 2 XJ6, and a friend of a friend of his was interested as he was looking to build a D type replica. They turned up in a willow green V12 2+2 and this was to be my first memorable trip in an E type jag and from that quick blast This was the car I wanted.

In 2003 I found one advertised in the JDC, owned father and son since 1978 , very original but needing work, manual, no sunroof , tax exempt and dark blue colour was in my top 3 choices.

As soon as the car was home the wolfrace slot mag alloys, which had been fitted in 1976 were removed and replaced with chrome steels with white walls. However these tyres were even older and combined with crushed needle rollers in the rear arms, every damper and bush worn to excess the car drove somewhere between awful and dangerous.

I have hardly used the car due to these problems plus I have been very busy with my other project ( a V12 MK10 ) but I have since made a start on the E type after finding this forum with a bit of inspiration after looking at the pictures Phils Dark blue coupe.

Nice looking E and good to see it on White Walls. What make are they?

she has a heritage certficate and the build date is , 29 December 1972 just coming into the uk tax exemption rule

As for the white walls, on that picture they were ER 70's which are now no more. I have recently bought a set of new tyres, again white walls made by Enduro. not a great make I know but they have the highest speed rating I could get. This said they are still only H rated which means 130 mph, but a modern tyre is even at this rating would have been tested more than and be up to more stress than the old Dunlop test of the late 60's early 70's, so I hope they'll be fine.

The tyre rating has been a much talked about subject in the past on this forum. I can't confirm for a Series 3, however in the Series 1 4.2 e-type handbook it states HR tyres are the manufacturers choice for the car.

It would be interesting to read what an original series 3 handbook says on ratings.

For info: I can confirm that Dunlop SP sport ER70 H rated are still available from Longstone's and Vintage tyres (Beaulieu) etc.

The handbook for the 4.2 series 2 gives tyres as Dunlop SP Sport 185VR15. The series 3 gives Dunlop E70 VR 15 Sport.

The tyre ratings were changed in the 60's and Jaguar sent out a service bulletin confirming the minimum spec for the E-Type under the new system was VR rated tyres. Argument abounds as to whether fitting lower rated tyres is in contravention of the Construction and Use Regulations or whether, in the event of an accident, their use could invalidate your insurance. The speed you were traveling has little bearing on the matter - owners are required to fit tyres ratings specified by the car manufacturer.

Hi folks ,
regarding this tyre issue, I personally like to be correct about tyres as they are the only thing between yourself and the road, so I don't like to mix them, under size them or have bald ones.

I have read the story about an insurance company throwing out a claim on tyres which were of a lesser speed rating, and with my new white walls only rated to 130mph I phoned my insurance company (Hagerty) and they said no problem as they are nearly double the nation speed limit, but other companies may differ, so it's worth checking.

In my years in the accident repair game, I have yet to see an insurance engineer read the side wall of a tyre ,as its involves bending the knee's and bit to close to getting dirty :D.

You hit the nail on the head. Provided you tell your insurance company of a change in spec it is not a problem. Some people fear it will affect their premium but usually this is not the case.

Bottom line: tell your insurance company about ANY change in the standard Jaguar specification. If you do so you have transferred the risk to them.

Yes David your right , tell your insurance if your unsure about something, they are not all bas"?$ds, and as regard to Hagerty , after talking to them about my V12 powered MK10 saloon and a modified V12 XJ-S and a 400 BHP BMW M5 and encluding the E type they have always sorted me out with great cover that has cost little more than I pay for a 1.6 VW golf on an every day policy.

Honesty is always the best policy :)
