Does anyone know where I can find a screw on gear knob with the 5 speed gear positions marked? I've bought a universal fitting type but can't tighten it sufficiently to stop it slipping.
Thanks

Many thanks, David. I find the sngb site difficult to find things on. perhaps I should call them more! That gear knob is on backorder and I'll check with them on Monday how long to wait.
Thanks again
Chris

some success has been had with putting PTFE tape on the thread to stop slippage.

try Hustons as they sell the E-Type Fabs 5 speed so should have the knobs.

Thanks, Mark, it's a good suggestion. I didn't want to do anything that would damage the thread because it's in good nick. I'll give it a try while I wait for sngb to get the proper screw type knob back in stock.
regards
Chris

I got the 5-speed knob for my T5 from Watjag. Was about 7 years ago, though.

Try a slim lock nut under the knob. I filed one down from an ordinary nut. No damage to threads.

Simon.

You need the correct Jaguar part C1928 - "Nut, Locking Knob to Change Speed Lever", Chrome plated and in stock at SNGB at 89p :

I know. I sound like a cheap skate (perhaps I am!). However, I have a non standard gear lever - a legacy of the Getrag conversion. The correct nut would not fit and I actually had to drill and tap my gear knob. The home made thread was not a tight fit as per the original so I had an almost identical problem to Chris (the OP) with a loose gear knob. I guess I could search for a chrome plated slim nut of the correct thread, but even with my Heath Robinson approach, it is all fixed and almost invisible now. The Zinc plate has stayed shiny inside the car and it’s hard to tell the difference to chrome plate.
I guess Chris can order and use the correct nut.
Regards,

Regarding the SNG offering, I purchased a 5speed knob from them a few years ago, but it cracked in several places. Still usable, just annoying. So I purchased two from them earlier this year (one a replacement for the E and another for a Lotus project) and both arrived with very visible cracks, fresh out of the box. They sent a replacement, and it too arrived cracked. They were obviously having some sort of problem which I hope they resolve, as their knob is the same size as the standard E knob, is nicely weighted, and looks very period correct. They refunded my money, but I would rather have one of their (other than cracks) very nice knobs.

Just to round this very helpful thread off, the suggestion of Watjag (they no longer do it) led to Elite Transmissions from whom I got my T5 box. They do engraved, screw type gear knobs at £45.

I've ordered one!"
Many thanks for all the advice.

I know Chris has his gearknob now, but out of interest I got a new gearknob made for me. A british guy working in the states makes gear knobs from your choice of wood, any thread, any motif. I sent him a picture of the E type steering wheel growler, and said "I want one like that". He found a tie pin with that exact motif, right size, and made me a gear knob with that.
Picture below is my new Gearknob - not E Type I know, but I like it. Nice feel and weight to it to.
He's a nice guy - here's his website, called "British Autowood"
