Hello Every one.

I have been an E-type owner for a week now, so I thought I would register here.

Since taking it (Ernie), an immaculate silver-blue 1968 2+2 Auto, the brake lights stopped working (fuse) The indicator stopped wanting to indicate right due to the auto-cancel bush being worn right down and was wedged with bits of matchstick!!! (I assume there should be another bush that prevents the steering shaft from wobbling around that has disappeared / disintegrated), and on the ferry back to the Isle of Wight I grounded the exhaust and separated the mid and back baffle boxes and had to leave it overnight on the docks (now fixed). Apart from that it's great. Oh, and the chassis number is recorded incorrectly on the V5 so I have to take it to the 'Dooovla' for inspection (on the ferry again). Where do I get white numbers for black stick-on front number plates as I am loosing the private plate on it ? (I have been told you can leave the black background on and just change the white numbers).

Now I know why cars this old get road tax exemption. They know we have suffered enough!

Lots of help and information here but don't be afraid to ask if you have a problem.

Best place I know for number plates is Tipper's: http://www.tippersvintageplates.co.uk/ who can supply the complete plate - don't bother trying to remove the white characters. You can use a hair drier to gently warm the old one to make it easier to remove but first put a couple of small strips of masking tape to mark the horizontal and vertical position. When you get your new sticky plate remove the backing and spray the bonnet and glue side with glass cleaner (green or blue stuff in a spray applicator). This will allow you to easily position the plate against the masking tape, remove excess cleaner and the remains will evaporate over night leaving the plate firmly attached. Do check the new and old plates are the same size otherwise you will need to move the masking tape.

Grounding will always be a problem in an E-Type so approach sharp inclines slowly at an angle. You may also want to check the suspension is at the correct height - the front is adjustable. Worth checking the tyres as many people fit lower profile ones such as the Pirelli P4000 but these will reduce the already low ground clearance by another 1". If you will be using that ferry a lot consider fitting the original spec 185 tyres (Michelin or Vredestein) available from Longstone Tyres - contact details in 'The Library' section of the Forum.

I have Avon R15 185 fitted. It was prob more because the last pair of U-bolts were pointing downwards. They are now pointing to the side.
