Post by 1966EType2+2PS » Sun Jun 07, 2020 3:18 am

Thank you for the add to the forum,
I just become a e type owner my car is 1966 2+2 with automatic transmission.
It’s little overwhelming to be honest, so many parts in this little car!
I do have couple a question right in the beginning
1. Is.. why are some of suspension parts on the jaguar red ?
2. Do I have the right Automatic transmission for my car?
Here are some pictures, thanks for your help!

Your auto transmission should be a Borg Warner Model 8 .Somewhere on it will be a plate which tells you what it is. If by red parts you are referring to the final drive unit, they were painted when new with a special paint called Glyptol which is red in colour, similar to Red Lead

Hi..welcom to the forum...please try to put your name and car model in the signature area.....the red parts in your photo above are the steering rack and anti roll bar and drop links...they would have been black from the factory...just been painted red by a previous owner at some time...Steve

Thank you very much for your responses,
I see i have a very long journey ahead of me.
Do u have any experiences with restoring a engine, what companies are there in Europe and what is the general cost ?
My engine has been dissembled few months ago, its starting to show some surface rust.

Will update the name and model shortly.
Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter. Welcome. From what can be seen of your car there appears to be a fair bit of restoration work needed. I would suggest putting off any engine or driveline repairs until you have the rest of the restoration close to completion. Otherwise you will have a rebuilt engine sitting around, deteriorating and going off warranty, while you deal with the inevitable delays getting the body ready. Put some oil in the cylinders, oil up the outside of the engine, fill the sump with clean oil, drain the cooling passages , wrap up the whole thing in plastic and turn it over by hand every month or so. Many of these restoration turn into multi year projects.

Thank you for that Geoff, that is actually good idea.
I am in process of going through the car looking at what parts are there... looking for parts that are not there and etc. Where to buy, what to buy new or original.
I will be doing a lots of homework before the actual work on the car starts. I would almost say this will be ,,lifetime ‘ project for me.
With the information i have on the car, where would be the best place to look for additional information as how the car left the factory .. interior/exterior colors, equipment options?
I do want to make one note that is... jaguar has sunroof ... and if I am not a mistaken , correct me if I am please sunroof where dealer installed in Europe (?)

Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter...As far as im aware sunroofs were fitted by the dealer and not at the factory.....A Heritage certificate will give details of how it left the factory https://www.jaguarheritage.com/archive- ... tificates/ you could also try a search of your car on http://www.xkedata.com/ or post your vin number and we can look it up for you if you cant workout how to do it.... I would also recommend getting this book....its got lots of usefull information of a home diy restoration

Thanks Steve, ordered that book from England today, got a family member there. It’s a lot cheaper.
I was in process of doing the heritage certificate / need to wait for the title to come in mail from previous owner. Once I receive i will get that done.
The jaguar is painted Willow Green currently but not sure if that is the original paint as it shows some blue from under.
Black interior
Any suggestion of what parts supplier i should be looking at for?
SNG Barratt / Terry’s jaguar parts / Martin Robey / Moss parts.

Thanks
Peter

Hi Peter...you wont go far wrong with any of those suppliers....I know SNGB very well they have a great website with lots of detailed drawings and parts numbered.....as for original colour have a look behind the dash thus never usually gets repainted so should have original paint colour......if you join a Jag club like the JDC etc you will get a discount from some of the suppliers if you give your member number....all the best....Steve

Welcome to the forum Peter.

One crucial thing I have learnt from restoring mine is wherever possible try to repair or refurbish original parts as the fit, quality, and service life will be far superior. That said where parts are missing or completely beyond repair, the suppliers you mention are a good starting point. I would add Hutson Motor Co (Andy Raynor) and Monocoque Metalworks (Chuck) to your list for body and repair panels. Both restore E types as well as sell parts so are very knowledgeable .

I look forward to pictures of your progress.

Thank you Simon,

I can tell you I am little overwhelmed with the search for parts.
There lots that came with car but also lots that did not.
Some examples,

Air breather/ cleaner assembly
Air cooling assembly
The whole wiper assembly including the motor .. any suggestions for where i can buy the motor without sending the unit in since i don’t have one ?

That is what have gone through so far.
Must say SNG Barrat makes the job easier with their website set up.

Like previously mentioned for now all i will be doing now is searching for parts, perhaps buying some of the hard to find one.
Thank you all and have a nice day,

Regards, Peter

Good evening,
I have a chance to buy this wiper motor, this one is from 68 2+2 e type.
Question is will this work in our 66 , were these units compatible within these two years?
And does it matter if the motor came from right hand drive car?
Our car is left hand drive.
Thank you,
Peter

Hello,
I did little bit more research on original paint of the car.
Went under/ behind the dash all in grey color
Also found a spot where someone tried to do the same and sanded down a spot.
What you all think about it ?
Regards,
Petr

Opalescent Silver Blue by the looks of things, although it's possible that it is Opalescent Silver Grey

Hello Peter, your wiper motor is correct for series 1 , it seems to be missing its drive gear and shaft though. This I think is specific to this DL3 type motor - so you need to find this .The rotary link and link rod are available from Richard Smith and others.
The motors are made up for left or right drive but it is only a wiring change you will find plenty about it on here (swap a couple of wires inside the motor case)

If the project is likely to be a long one and you are missing important bits then it has to be said....stuff does show up on ebay....you need to keep your wits about you...people think that because it is bolted to an e type it must be very rare and worth a fortune....that" S/H Lucas fuse holder from dad's long scrapped car"!!!!!

Don't over pay for life expired junk but equally you can strike gold and find NOS or very good original used parts for sale for sensible prices (except jacks and tool rolls!) that may only need light repair or refurbishment....and original is usually better than reproduction.

I recently picked up the small bracket that fits around the steering column for my car that trips the levers in the self cancel mechanism on the switch! Cost me a fiver plus £3 postage....I finally have self cancelling indicators

Thanks Julian,
Right about eBay, it has been my source of OG/NOS parts for my other two projects. ( not jaguar) for a long time.
It just feels like people have the idea that e type parts being super rare so getting good deal on some of the parts is bit of a hassle. My go to guy for jaguar parts on eBay is now Matt at rw.auto.classics. Seems like he is got good amount of parts for European cars.
Thanks !

Hello,

1.Bespoke wiring harnesses ... what is everyone’s opinion and perhaps experiences?
2. Brake pedal housing .. little confused. I have automatic car. Will stay with automatic. Is the pedal housing different for auto vs. manual cars or only thing what changes is the actual pedals?
3. Thank you!
