#1 new member / dealer and car opinions please

Post by benway » Fri Feb 05, 2021 12:32 pm

Hello All!

Just started my research before buying an e type and have found the forum great-- so thanks much for that.

Is there a " ratings " or "review" section of peoples experience of known/regular e type car dealers, or is it okay to just ask and get pm's?

I have done a search

Thanks!

Haydn

Haydn, welcome to the best place for all things E Type.
As for recommendations or more importantly negative reviews the forum has to be careful not to malign dealers or individuals.

If you find a car or cars you can always post information on here and you will get people’s thoughts. A simple review of recent posts show someone in the US getting good advice and you can get PMs if you request them.

One forum moderator is Angus Moss (1954etype) a well respected restorer and he sometimes has cars for sale. Look him up on here and drop him a line.

Good luck with your search and make sure you view cars properly, learn what to look for and get hold of the recommended books. If you have to ask which books you’ve not looked in the knowledge section

I'll let other more knowledgeable members reply, but as it's LHD it probably has twin Strombergs which makes it less desirable to most. I wonder why there are no photos of the engine? If the car was as good as the dealer says, it is a good price in my view. But I wouldn't rely on that!

I have seen these cars listed befor......quite a few cars but no feedback from anyone that has purchased a car....unless you can actually go and see them and touch them then give them a mis....prices seem low.....there must be a reason?.....Steve.......usually on ebay a dealers name, address and contact details would be at the bottom of the page

I'd agree with all the above.....treat with caution until you have seen the car. It's probably On Stromberg carbs. If imported the dealer should have all the appropriate importation documents etc and should have or be in the process of registering with the DVLA here. You can check the documentation matches the car numbers etc...bit odd there are no snaps of the engine but probably just an oversight. As Steve says the eBay add has no trading address yet he appears to be a dealer...

If that's a dealer, I'm a Dutchman. Car in what is an obvious domestic garage, along with a very scrappy looking lhd XK120 . Be very, very careful and don't part with a penny until you have seen the cars involved

I'd also recommend doing what I did, unless you are an expert yourself - I paid someone who really knows these cars to check out what I was looking at before I bought. Saved me a fortune in the longer term.

They are scattered over some of the "usual suspect" classic car for sale websites.

This is what is surprising, whole bunch of e types for sale in Perth, scotland and nobody's heard of them!

Thanks

That S 2 roadster looks quite nice - price seems reasonable * if * the bodywork is in good nick . For ex US cars , you need to factor in the cost of : triple Su conversion , diff. ratio change ( 3.54 to 3.07 ) and RHD conversion . That might be as much as £ 15 k ( done by specialist ) . Then you need to consider that the car will be worth less than the equivalent genuine UK RHD car .

For me, the absence of a picture of under the bonnet is a key issue. You quite often find US cars are resprayed but, due to the effort of taking the engine out, the bulkhead and the frames are still the original body colour. Even worse, you find the bulkhead is the correct colour but the frames are a different colour!

As others have said, on a car like that, I would never part with any money without a full-on independent inspection by a marque specialist.

i've had brief contact with them trough email. they have a series 1 2+2 up for sale also for 30k seem legit as they are also on carandclassic. but i decided not to move the conversation forward since i don't like the colour. I first contacted them for the series 2 green one also posted for 30k but that was already gone they said.
just email them and get someone you trust to go there i guess?

That's the key! I nearly bought one that looked great, until my expert pointed out all the issues - would have cost me 10's of £'ooos to sort. He was happy with the next one so I bought it. Nothing to sort out, zero £s. And he cost me £250 to take along.

Ralph : I do not wish to seem too cynical, but the fact a purported vendor is advertising on e.g. Car and Classic means absolutely nothing . A friend of mine who is a well known and well respected dealer in classic Jaguars was astonished when I drew to his attention two cars which he had just bought at auction were now being advertised on the net by a Belgian dealer using the photographs which were those from the auction catalogue ! In other words, this was a completely fraudulent advertisement . Do not accept photographs as evidence of possession, let alone ownership . Be very wary of cars with no registration marks ( as these are ) . Part with no money unless you have not only seen the cars, but have checked their history thoroughly , and do not fall for the oldest trick in the book which is " oh if you are going to take time checking , I have a man waiting who wants it immediately"
