Hi, I am another new member :D
I am sure that this forum will be a great help. Below is my baby, 1965 4.2. We have been together for ten years now. Bought when I couldn't afford it but wasn't old enough to know better (25), but she has survived the major dangers of marrage, house buying and a bairn without us parting company.
Underwent a fairly major mechanical overhaul in 2005-2006, and has been further improved each year since.
This years MOT wasn't as painful as it can be so she was rewarded with some shiny new wheels.
The most frustrating problem over time was her inability to deal with traffic jams, especially when the weather was warm, and we have blocked various main arterial routes. The usual behaviour was to start burping and farting before conking out and sulking for 20-30 mins before she would start again. This seems to have been finally cured following the purchase of a kenlow fan, electric ignition and a new fuel pump. Oh, directing the radiator over flow pipe away from the distributor also helped!
Although I love my car, I am a not particularly mechanically minded, so please be patient with my questions!
Here's hoping that the next ten years are slightly easier with the help of this forum,
Cheers
Fenton

Hi Fenton,

Welcome to the forum. I am fairly new to the forum myself so will not be much help with the problems. However there are a few people on the forum who really do know their stuff.

Welcome anyway and keep adding articles as it keeps the forum alive.

Regards

Welcome my friend. Always good to see new people. Out of interest do you know what month in 1965 your car was registered?

My 4.2 FHC was built in October 64, registered Jan 1 1965. I am currently putting it back together (just back from paint) so I am on the lookout for cars that may have been put together at a similar times as mine (a transition between 3.8 and 4.2) because its not the same as all the other 4.2 series 1s.

Cheers

Chris

Chris,

Thank God it was not a rusty one!!!!. I think I would have given up long ago. Great record of the build.

Welcome Fenton from another S1 4.2 FHC owner.

Chris......What Chassis number is yours and how does it differ from others apart from not having wheels etc. :)

Having wheels is vastly overated  you only have to keep them clean...

My chassis number is 1E20035 (so the 35th FHC made)

Obvious differences are:

1. the horns are inside the bonnet and not just in front of the picture frame

2. I have the glass windscreen washer bottle

3. the servo pipework runs across the bulkhead but I have a seen a few 4.2's with this.

4. There are some wiring differences but I am not sure what they are. I am only saying this because the nice man at the wiring harness company told me he knew that from the chassis number and will make me the harness to suit. I am swapping out the ammeter for a voltmeter at the same time

5. the top part of the aircleaner housing has 3 'grooves' and is not smooth like the 4.2. People are often telling me i have the wrong one but its been like that for 33 years so is probably original

There may be a bunch of other things but I have not tried doing a direct compare. Nothing major though.

Chris, I think you have the bit about the air filter plenum round the wrong way. The 3.8s were smooth (I think the early cars), the 4.2s went to the grooved version.

Basically, you have a 3.8 bodyshell - main differences between the 3.8 and the very early 4.2s is the fuel pump mounting in the drivers side rear wing and the extra hole near the voltage regulator for the alternator wiring. You even have the blanking plates in the bulkhead for the 3.8 bellows type servo.

My car is the same as yours except I have the plastic washer bottle, external horns and no blanking plates.

Mine is 203 from memory....or 303 ...or 202???

Anyhow it also has the horns in the bonnet, glass doop dah and pipes across the bulkhead, Not checked the air box.

Didn't realise this was unusual, My hooters and very rusty and the bonnet has been scrapped :?

Hi Fenton,

Also from me a warm welcome to the group. I am also the proud owner (I am a newby, I only own the car for about four years now) of a 1966, series 1, 4.2, FHC.

As others have already stated, this forum is truly a wealth of info and having met some of the guys "live", I can vouch that there are all enthusiast and sympathetic car nuts ! : )

Good luck !
Erik

PS What size and brand of wheels did yu decide on and why ? (I am still in serious debate what new wheels I would buy for my own car)

I think that he's busy trying to get that huge puddle of Typ-Ex off the nose of his car....Welcome Fenton!

Good to have another S1 4.2 Coupe. We'll soon have the set of all colours made for the 4.2!

Hi,

thanks for the kind replies. I believe that it was registered in April '65 if that helps.
Re wheels, I ordered stainless steel wheels from Murray Scot Nelson.

We had an outing last weekend....... I had promised my wife a night away in a spa hotel in the lakes, oh, we'll take the Jag I suggested nonchalantly. The first 70 miles or so were effortless, with the car going as well as it ever has, absolutely flying........ Then a roundabout,,,, no ability to change gear, a traffic jam ensued, followed by a bit of good old fashioned pushing. The puddle of hydraulic fluid hinted at the clutch cylinder being at fault, and the AA were called.

The AA suggested that I would have to wait three hours as they were rather busy. I managed to call in a favour from a friend with a recovery business, and the etype completed another journey on the back of a breakdown truck.
