Hi,
I am converting from Stromberg to triple SU carbs.
I need to change the choke cables and need some advice on how to do this.
Do I need to remove the dashboard top, and if so how do I do that?

Phil, welcome to the forum.
The dash top isn’t difficult to remove, look underneath and you can see the nuts holding it on, including looking in the drop down dash area behind the gauges. You’ll see the vent pipes and other bits that’ll need loosening off, too.
Do you have the proper manuals for the car as shown in the knowledge section? They really do tell you so much of how to tackle most jobs even if not actually giving the answer to this it has all the detail of how parts are fitted that a general car mechanic knowledge will allow you to work out what to do.

As emphasised in the knowledge section, use the info there to have readily to hand, maybe printing off a page or two to save getting your copy of the above oily, but you really should buy it and have it as your principle reference.

Phil : the dash top is secured by studs passing through 4 nuts - IIRC they are something like 3/16 or 1/4 AF. To get at the outer ones, you need to remove the decorative pieces at the outer end of the underside of the dash top , and unscrew the nut at each side. Then open the centre drop down panel, and you will find a similar nut at each oter part of the aperture. Releasing these should enable you to raise the top and disconnect the hot air pipes. With the steering wheel at its full extended position, you should then be able to fiddle the top past the wheel

I'd be trying that first.

In theory you can get to it through the tacho aperture, but it is very, very fiddly to do anything with the cables by that means, and taking the top off is no more than about 15 minutes' work

Is it easy to get the tacho out without taking the dash top off ? I ask because my tach does not light up , so I presume the bulb has gone .

Hi Mark...on my 2+2 .i could get my hand up behind the dash and undo the two knurled nuts that hold the retaining bracket and remove either rpm guage or speedo...but you could just pull the bulb holder out......easy enough to try......Steve

I’ve done the conversion from stroms to SU carbs and from experience can advise that you will need to take the dash top off. It isn’t difficult.

You will need a new choke cable of the solid wire type, not the stranded type used on Strombergs and you will need to work out how to fix this to the mechanism. The securing clamp for the inner cable differs but if I recall correctly this can be modified
