72 EXB - my father's old E-Type
#1 72 EXB - my father's old E-Type
Hello, first post here. I am not an E-Type owner (I wish...) but my father, who died a few years ago, had one in the 1960s, though he sold it on long before I was born. I found a photo of the car, reg 72 EXB, amongst his things, and also an old maintenance and service manual (I understand these are quite collectible). The car is still very much in existence and registered on gov.uk – I suspect my dad was its first owner in 1962.
If the current owner does see this I'm sure it would be a fascinating piece of background.

Excellent. I live in hope that someone will contact me one day about my car which is a September 62 FHC. 3672PE. Apparentlythe first owner was a batchelor and so has no family, which rather put a stop to the sort of nostalgic post we see here. Ah well. I am sure the owner of "your" car will be along shortly....well sometime in the future . Do you have the chassis number , if so you could post in XKEDATA well done for putting the photo etc up here. Period photos and documents are the holy grail.

its on XKEDATA as chassis number 860682, so just before my car, I imagine its something like a June 62 build. Originally red. Wow a bright red E type in 1962, your Dad must have been rocking.

In the last JDC E-Type register directory that I have, 72 EXB is shown as serial 860682 but, there aren't any details about the owner.
@andrewh, the directory does show an owner for your car 3672PE and, if you don't have that information, let me know and I'll pass you the owner details by private mail. Seems unlikely you don't know that, though.
Cheers, Chris

Thanks for the replies. It's good to know the photos are interesting to others, not just to me! I will post the pics in XKEDATA too. Maybe the current owner will see it, someday.
@andrewh – my dad had a string of interesting cars. In the early 60s he was a batchelor, did something in the Foreign Office, lived in a flat off the King's Road, had slightly dodgy teeth and generally styled himself as international man of mystery so the E-Type fits right in (though he'd moved on to a green 1966 BMW 1500 when I was a kid). I can imagine both he and the first owner of your car were part of a small set of like-minded London gents in the early 60s.

I don't think I've seen a car with a single nudge-bar rod connecting the front over-riders. There are usually 2 on the US ones. Top one missing perhaps.

I sold it around 78. I think I bought it in Dartford. But I'm not sure. I'd love to see it again. I have a few more pics fir the owner.

I've found another picture of 72EXB which is interesting. This was taken at a classic car show in Bearsted, and shows the car as a convertible. I'm really puzzled - has someone taken my old cars identity and built a replica, or rebodied it as a convertible, destroying the original in the process, or maybe just reused the registration for a different car? Here's a photo, I'd really appreciate any interpretations of whats happened here.

I am sorry to say its quite likely to have been rebuilt into a Roadster. Unless we know the chassis number its not possible to say really without viewing it. Bearstead is close to me but I cannot recall seeing it around the Weald of Kent but I shall keep an eye out. Any idea when that photo was taken?

The 72EXB roadster was pictured at Bearsted Classic Car show in July 2022. I owned it between 1976 and 1978, when it was most definitely a FHC, though a very sad and rusty one with a fibreglass bonnet. It had failed its MOT on rust with a recommendation to scrap it when I sold it.
Apparently converting the FHC into a DHC used to be a thing, which I guess explains how many rear hatches for FHCs are for sale on ebay. If 72EXB roadster is the same car as my 72EXB FHC, it would be really nice to see it repaired and turned back into a FH, though I can see how that could be extremely expensive.

Lots of pictures of it here at a Kent South Jaguar Club meeting in 2012, as a DHC.
