#1 NEW MEMBER from Switzerland

Post by osgii » Tue Sep 06, 2011 6:15 pm

This is it. Finaly, after a very long period of searching, seeking, and looking after a good old lady to enjoy with, I founded a good balance of rusty, but not to rusty car :)

I'm Jonathan, living in switzerland, already the father of an old Opel GT 1973, and just married new member. I founded my e-type on the web. It's a S 1.5 bronze, 4.2, actually still in New York, but soon in my garage :)

I'm very happy to be a member of the E-Type Club. I advise you all that it's my first english car, and I will for sure ask you many, many questions to you experimented boys and girls

I'm sorry to admit that I won't be a great help to you all, e-type lovers... but if you ask, i'll try to be as helpfull as I can.

And finaly, english is not my mother tong... so please be kind with my words...

Welcome Jonathan feel free to fire away with any questions (the more challenging the better!). Your English is very good - better than my Swiss!

Hi Jonathan, welcome to the world of the Jaguar E-Type...I'm English but live in Switzerland too and also have an E-type, but mine is undergoing restoration at the moment...well it's been put on hold for a while, you'll find the whole story here:

http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=298

But I'd be very interested in hearing how difficult or easy it is to ship the car here (in your case from the US), what sort of duties and tax you had to pay and how easy is it going to be to get it registered. I only ask as I'll be going through a similar process when mine is ready.

The only slight difference is that my car was originally a Swiss car, so when I ship it back here (it's in the UK now) I don't think I have to pay any import duty..or maybe it's the tax I don't have to pay (I'll have to look into it).

I look forward to seeing some photos posted when the car arrives.

Best Regards

Peter

Hi Red,

sorry, I didn't see your comment.
So what I have to pay for the import is about 13% of the selling price. You have 8% VaT, 4% of direct tax (imp?ts), and a few other little things that must be payed (papers...).

I had a long talk with a custom office yesterday, and it seams that you can completely remove the 4% tax, if you import your car from a country part of the EU (check EUR 1 on the web to gather more info).
The entire shipping from rotterdam to my home is 700 euros, and they take care of custom papers and all that stuff.

I'll receive the car next tuesday! So i'll then start the process for registration. To do so, I know i'll have to convert the US car to a Swiss car (MPH-KMH, switch US lights for EU ones, etc...), but I think this doesn't apply to yours.

...

Ho... I just red your story. What a sad issue! You shound't give up, and continue your restoration. Keep in mind how happy you'll be when driving in the car you restored yourself.
Don't you have a friend fan of mecanics or so? Sometimes, they are able to give you the force to continue your job. As someone said on your thread, i'm sure once the body is ready, the rest will go much quicker.

Keep it up!

Hi Jonathan. Your first English car eh? Welcome to the dark side. There's no going back. Ah well, just enjoy and keep us informed of progress (or lack of it!).
Cheers

Hehe, it's for sure not the same car as my old Opel!

I met the transporter at the border this morning! After 3 hours, and lots of paper work, the truck finally drove to it's final destination with my lady on it.

The tyres are done, by I did not have the choice to quickly test it... jesus... what a treasure!

The car is in a quite poor condition, but the 4.2 engine is running perfectly well! I'll make a complete checkup this week-end.

Here are the first two pictures I took during the back home trip.
