#1 HELP Oil leak on series 2+2

Post by pete » Fri Aug 16, 2013 3:10 pm

Hi

I have just had head gasket replaced and head skimmed ,replacing valves to run on unleaded, I still have an oil leak not from the head or sump but from the rear of the engine by the clutch. The gearbox is good for oil can anyone point me in the right direction and is this an engine out job.

Thanks

Pete

Sounds like the rear rope seal which is engine out I am afraid. Couple of things to check first though - have a look at the banjo bolts at the rear of the head securing the oil pipes; they can leak and the oil drops down to the area you are concerned about. Secondly check the crankcase breather housing is clear and not blocked with old oil; a blocked pipe increases crankcase pressure and it starts forcing its way past the rear rope seal. If it is the rear rope seal make sure you chose a Company who understands how to fit it properly - leave it in a jar of oil for a week and use the correct sizing tool should be the answers.

The other thing to consider , Pete , is whether the leak is a bad one. If the car is just leaving a few drips when standing , frankly I would not pull the engine out just for this, but would wait until there is another reason for removal e.g. clutch replacement. If, however, it is leaving pools of oil every time you let it stand, then it has gone too far to leave it . First thing to do is follow David's advice on breathers and oil running down the back of the engine ( the latter particularly if this problem has only just become apparent since head removal )
