I'm trying to get my 1967 jaguar E type 2+2 on the road, i've owned it for 13 years now. The IRS is getting rebuilt first. I have it pulled out

I'm having a devil of a time getting the handbrake compensator off the cage, I tried to turn one of the 2 mounting bolts and its just spinning, I can't quite see up under there but it feels like weld nuts on the inside of the cage, anyone have any insight? I'll probably make a more elaborate post in the technical section on the overall removal restoration of the IRS later!

You are correct; captive nuts. IIRC it'a actually a steel plate with 2 threaded holes, but not certain.

If it were me with that amount of rust I'd just cut the bolt heads off.

Cage containing square nuts. You can prise open the cage and get a spanner on the nuts. Give it a good soaking in penetrating oil first.

If they are not captive, would you not call them "caged nuts"? On the s3 they are very thin and sit inside a pressed steel cage - they may well be loose and able to move, which is why you can't undo them. If this is the case, then a very thin 1/2" spanner will be needed.
