#1 Hello from Italy

Post by Portello » Sun Mar 16, 2014 4:13 pm

Dear all,
first of all thanks for your hospitality.
I'm writing from Italy and I'm not a Jaguar owner (sorry).
I'm an alfista (sorry again  ), but... a friend of mine owns a gorgeous opalescent dark green '62 E-type.

About this car my friends has a big considers about any mismatching of its equipments:
- rear glasses are in perspex,
- carbs are SU H8 instead of SU HD8,
- gearbox is the jag 4 gear instead of the Moss,
- suspensions are at lower limit regulation, so every irregularity of the road means touch of the exhaust (and ouch!),
- brake pads are not original (I don't remember P/N),
- last mistery is the typed name on the car registration document: E-type S.

All these "particularity" le us though was a "modified" car for sport use, but the last is very no-normal, because after a lot of search, no E-type "S" we have found, neither in Italy nor in other country.

Please, could you help us about this issue?

Thanks a lot from two italian sleepless fans.
Portello

Welcome to the Forum!

In answer to your questions:

1. The windows should be glass all around. Obviously the car has been modified to reduce weight for racing
2. I have never come across such a H8 SU carb - only H4, HS2, HS4, HS6, HS8, HIF and HD8
3. The Jaguar 4 speed would be a sensible modification for road or race
4. No fun driving an E-Type quickly with so little ground clearance. Reset to standard factory specification and you will be delighted with the result
5. I use Greenstuff brake pads rather than the originals - they work very well for fast driving
6. No such model as an E-Type 'S'. The factory Lightweights had an 'S' prefix on the chassis number (e.g. S850666) but they only built 12 of them and they are all accounted for. Sounds like a previous owner added this detail himself!

Please post some photos, also tell us what the chassis number is and we may be able to help further.

car registration document: E-type S.
As it seems to be modified for racing, any link to the xk150s engine?

I'm an alfista (sorry again Embarassed )
No apologies needed there, my daily driver is a GTV. :D
