Finally realised life-long dream. Manual '73 V12 2+2 in opalescent grey with wire wheels.

Apparently restored recently by Classic Restorations in Perthshire... Checked with them and they confirmed has had ?78k spent! Anyway, had it sanity checked by David Barnett of Classic Autosports who confirmed it is a good one, so... I'm having David do some minor fettling to get it perfick and I pick it up in a couple of weeks hopefully.

Being a novice, what are the must - knows about these thing? Will it need tuning every second thursday? Will it kill me if I go out in the wet? who do I trust to work on it in SE London? etc etc.

All advice greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome. Every 4th Thurday for tuning will be fine.

The first thing I would do is to get the car fully serviced so you know what's what. Harry, who runs this forum, will be able to help you there I'm sure, as you're in S. London.

The next thing is to get the car properly waxoiled. It was undoubtedly done in the restoration, but will probably be worth while getting it all checked / topped up. Then run the car whenever you like. I think that most of us would avoid the times when there is salt on the road, but otherwise the car should outlast the owner once properly protected.

Have fun with it,, and put some pictures up :D

Harry is the e-specialist in Tonbridge, correct? If so spoke to him about going up to check the car out for me. In the end it was easier to get it looked at locally. Seemed a gent.

Waxoyl is on the list for David B, as is a halogen light upgrade... the originals look like glow-worms to me.

Nice to be in the flow.

Hi there,

a warm welcome to this crazy fun and most knowledgeable forum (as I was fortunate enough to experience myself many times). Your car looks indeed fantastic.

Have fun and do look at our "sticky" gettogether invites. This is a fantastic no-nonsense crowd and it would be great to have you on bard for our next gettogether in June 2009 !!

cheers

#9 5 speed gearbox

Post by bill.lesleyp@tiscali.co.u » Sat Dec 27, 2008 11:48 pm

I have been reading all the coments regarding the various options for fitting a 5 speed gearbox to a Series 1 and thought I would let you know about my experience.
Last year I had the carbon thrust go on my car and as it meant taking out the engine and box I thought it was time I replaced the original Moss gearbox.
I purchased a CJ5 box from Dan Mooney at Classic Jaguar in Texas and fitted it to my car, you do not need to alter anything to fit this box and it uses the existing propshaft.
What a joy! after the old Moss box, no selecting reverse in mistake for 1st, no grinding as I pull away and 2000rpm at 60mph giving much better fuel consumption.
The only downside is that it is more noisey than I thought it would be, it runs on Dexion3, so that may be why, perhaps after a few thousand miles it may quieten down.
