S1 2+2 Door chrome strip
#1 S1 2+2 Door chrome strip
I'm slowly assembling my S1 2+2 bought as part restored. I have two chrome strips which seem to fit on the doors just below the windows, plus two smaller pieces which continue the strip for about six inches below the rear windows. Unfortunately someone appears to have cut a fraction of an inch off the ends of the two larger pieces and replacements do not seem to be available. Looking at photographs, some cars seem to have these strips and others don't. Can anyone tell me why some S1 cars do not have them and is there any source for replacements.

Hi Ken, I thought all variants of 2+2 had the chrome strip? As for replacements, have you tried Martin Robey or SNG Barrett.

Hi Ken
On the S1 cars there are two variants of door chromes. The OTS has the larger, broader piece which covers the whole of the top of the door (the door tops are different for the OTS so that the edge of the chrome lines up with the start of the rear wings, without such a chrome piece it would look most odd indeed), but in the FHC there is no such piece, as the door is of a different design on the top.

On the LWB 2+2 like yours with the longer doors there is a chrome "flash" across the top which as you pointed out extends to the panel behind the door.

Hope that clears that up for you :)

That's great. Thanks for the effort. I notice that on Google Images there are photographs of cars without the chrome strip. After seeing the pictures you posted I suspect that it is the coupe which doesn't have the strip.

Ken : it is indeed the FHC which has no polished strip at all on the door tops. When you say "fractions of an inch" cut off, just how much have you "lost", and what is the length of the extant strips , so that we can measure a correct one for you ?

Hi Chris. On the drivers door the top (convex) measurement is 760.mm and the bottom (concave) it is also 760.mm. On the drivers door the convex is 800.mm and the concave 760.mm. All very strange. I also note that there looks as if there is a captive square nut on the reverse side at either end. But on the drivers side strip this is missing at one end and on the passenger side it has been cut in half. Both edges at this end are a little rough, not what you would expect when they left the factory. I can only conclude that they have been shortened but for what reason is beyond me. I do note on the photographs that the strips do fit fairly close up to the windscreen trim so possibly they were shortened because of badly fitting doors at some time in the past. Thankfully not a problem now if that was the case.
