#1 Introduction and Parts Request.
Hello there,
I am in the process of restoring a 1966 Series 1 4.2L E type 2+2 and would very much welcome any guidance on the project and also some help with finding some hard to get parts.
I have today ( Friday 26th) just returned from the SNG Barratt Autojumble clearance that they are now holding once a month in order to clear some of the many used/new unwanted parts from their containers at the rear of the premises.
Whilst I was there I got speaking to a very helpful gentleman who very kindly told me to post on here, to try and locate some original Triple SU Carburettors for my E Type mentioned above. He did mention two names who might be able to help, but not having a great memory for names, I can only supply the names I can remember in no order - my apologies for that.
I was told to speak to a gentleman who has a car business called Moss? A bit vague I know, but he also mentioned a Peter Crispin? If any of you gentlemen are out there and can relate to this would you mind responding ? I apologise now if I have your names wrong or mixed up, but if you could help me in my search for these carburettors I would be eternally greatfull.

Hi (Gary?), welcome to the forum. I am assuming that l am the 'Moss' being referred to :D
Regarring carbs, l cant help lm afraid. David Lonsdale rebuilds carb sets and might have a set for sale. We prefer to go to Burlen and fit a brand new set. Not cheap at around 3.5k but by the time you have sourced a set and had them rebuilt, there isnt much difference.

Hi Angus, thanks for the quick response. I did search you on line but just wasn`t sure wether you was the right man.
Thanks for the guidance on the carbs, I did wonder if rebuilding them was going to work out any cheaper than new.
I don`t suppose you know of the other gentleman I mention - Peter Crispin or Peter Crispen?
Incidentally, I need another sump for my E Type as the one I have is cracked, don`t suppose anyone has a decent one around you know of? It`s the finned/ribbed version.
Cheers
Gary

You can buy a complete new set of triples with linkages and manifolds and they are not cheap. What you are getting though is a brand new set of carbs that you can just bolt on and they will work. I did this with the series 1.5 car I have and did not regret it.
Most running problems in E types can be traced down to problems with carbs and on an old worn set they can be hard to pinpoint. If you are changing to triples you would be well advised to make sure that the set you put on are correct and have been completely rebuilt to as new spec. This includes rebushing the spindle shafts and replacing everything including the fuel bowl floats (use plastic ones not metal). A complete kit with all the parts needed is available.
Used triple carbs can often be had on Ebay.
Make sure you buy E type specific ones and ensure you get all the manifolds and linkages. Avoid sets that aren't complete or are in bits; while all parts are available it may cost more to buy the missing bits than you're saving. As you're going to completely rebuild them anyway the condition of what you buy is less important than completeness. I avoid buying things that have been "completely rebuilt/restored/etc". Sometimes you're just inheriting other people's mistakes and I prefer to make my own.
With the exception of rebushing the shafts, rebuilding SU's can be done by anyone who can use a screwdriver and read written instructions. It is not hard to di and is a useful lesson; you will understand what you are doing when tuning your car in the future. If you strip them yourself take lots of photos. If you do it yourself a complete rebuild including all parts and paying to have the throttle shafts done professionally costs around $AU600. If you have it all done professionally it will cost around three times that.
Triples off other Jag saloons won't fit under the E type bonnet so don't buy them. The earlier 3.8 E types had different (3 piece) manifolds; these will work on your car and are usually cheaper but don't look correct to the experienced eye.
Buying a new set of triple Webers complete with manifolds and linkages is a lot cheaper and may look an attractive option. Most people would advise against this however; the SU's are a better choice in most circumstances.
WRT your sump the best trick would be to have ir welded by a specialist alumimium welder. A lot of sumps have had this experience :-)

Thanks Andrew for the information.
I have been offered a few carb sets from other jags and have refused them for the reasons you say. I would rather get SU`s that are specific to the E Type along with the proper inlet manifold even if it does cost a little more.
I am going to try and source another sump for my engine - I just wouldn`t trust a welded one with a newly retored engine. I did hear today that SNG Barratt are going to make sumps themselves in the next 3 months though I suspect the price of them will send shivers down most people`s backs.
Thanks once again
Gary

Gary,
New carb sets for the E are indeed expensive. You can save some money buying a used set and refurbishing them yourself. Replacing the spindle bushes can be expensive if you don't have the tooling to do it yourself.
Watch out for people offering triple carb sets from a 420g, these look similar, but are not the same as the ones on the E. The bodies are the same, but the bells are different, and the 420g doesn't have manual chokes - by the time you buy the correct bits you are into the same kind of money as a used set of E carbs are.
As to the sump, post some pics of the crack. Tig welding a crack IS an option in some cases.

Andrew, I wish people would jack up E Types correctly which means NOT by their sumps!
