Hi to all. I am in northern Kentucky, USA (Near Cincinnati, OH).

For my retirement project, I picked up a 69 OTS basket case, but it came with all new sheet metal. I like challenges, and this one should last me a while. I am an experienced restorer with a fairly complete garage, but new to Jaguar. Looking forward to good conversation and advice from members here.

Bob, welcome to the forum.
Have you read through the knowledge section, if not that'll give you a very good starting point?
I'm sure one or two of our American members will also point you towards which clubs can be useful to join for information and advice.
I've been on here for a bit over a year and have found the forum members very helpful, friendly and a source of good humour, including having fun about two nations separated by a common language.

We'll all enjoy learning more of what you've got and photos are always a great way of telling the story. Good luck with your project.

Welcome to the forum, Bob. You will, indeed, find lots of friendly and very knowledgeable help here. Feel free to ask questions and I think you'll find someone is always ready with an answer.

Just how bad is your "basket case"? If you already have the sheet metal that you will need, i.e. preformed body panels and not flat sheet stock, you are ahead of the money game because body repairs can become eye wateringly expensive on what initially appears to be a sound car.

Enjoy the process and get to know the car as you go along. It might be a good idea to lay in a good stock of Hudepohl or Schoenling before you start.

Welcome to the forum! Looking forward to photos of the basket case, and questions that we can help you with.

Must admit I was a bit puzzled at Mark's advice, thought it might be some special paint stripper, or WD40 type penetrant, or similar chemical essential for the car. But after some googling I realise it's special liquid essential for the owner :D

When I said basket case I meant it!

Good news is that I have all the Martin Robey panels I needed to put it back together - full floor, both lower quarters, both sills, and all the gussets. Bonnet metal is in good shape, just all apart. I also bought Marek's covered headlight conversion kit. The tub had been media blasted so I can see clearly what's good and what needs to be done.

Front frame and IRS including brakes were done by PO. I have 5 wire wheels, nice exhaust, windscreen, good bumpers, and nothin' but time!

engine is untouched but seems to be OK, fingers crossed.

That takes the definition of basket case to a new level. I just love your attitude "I've have nothin' but time!" ... excellent stuff !

Looks like progress is going well in your rotisserie, already got the floors and rockers in, door hung and rear fender back on, welded and fillered. You'll be in the paint shop soon by the looks of it!

You are brave but your description is accurate, never seen a better basket case

Since some asked, I am posting pics of progress. I have the sheet metal work done on the tub, and got an initial coat of urethane primer on. I also got the doors fitted, the boot lid and the inside of the bonnet center section, all primered.

Already quite a bit improved over my day zero photo above!

Now I can REALLY see the dings, ripples and stuff!

Serious block sanding in my future.

Yup, you will also need your fettling skills for the MR panels too !

On that note, I noticed that the center section of the bonnet as well as the wings have a raw unfinished rear edge. Is this normal? When I fit these pieces it looks like they will need to be tweaked (is that fettled?) so an unfinished edge would make sense.

What does the finished edge on the rear of these pieces look like? If its not a raw edge, any advice on how to form this edge?

:edit: found the answercto my question - its a single thickness of steel in an unfinished edge.

update ~ I've reached the end of phase 1 - the tub is painted! Original color for the car, done in BC/CC. How 'bout them door gaps, huh? They took LOTS of work.

A lot accomplished since May. Compare my pic below to the one near the top of my thread, from Day zero.

That is an original Jaguar color called Pale Primrose. I learned that it was also used by Mercedes in the same era.

Ah, ok, it looks slightly lime green in the photos. I know Pale Primrose very well, my car is (was) that colour, now just getting reborn as Gunmetal Grey.
