New Member - Edinburgh - Scotland - S2 FHC

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note to introduce myself. Ash Marston - and Englishman living in Scotland!

Car is a 1970 S2 FHC. It has been in the family since 1973 with my mother using it as her everyday car for a few years.

I did a restoration in 1989/90 and it has had a very quite life since then with probably less than 10,000 put on the clock in the last 25 years. Its only 70,500 from new.

Circumstances have allowed me to bring it up to Edinburgh now and I have the use of a great workshop so its getting some winter attention. Some mechanical, some cosmetic.

Considering 123 Ignition so joined here to see what people's experiences were.

This is a truly great forum and I am delighted to be part of the community.

Hello Ash,

Add photos by reducing them in size to something like 600x300 and clicking on the "attachments" tab below the text box. They have to be pretty small to be accepted.

Then place them in line.

I have an S2 with the 123-tune and it is excellent.

Of course the signal it produces will only be as accurate as the input it receives, so worth checking for backlash in the distributor drive.

On my S2, we disabled the ballast resistor circuit, as it was no longer necessary with the 123 setup. This caused some head scratching for a bit as it is in a box on the bulkhead. Pretty simple really though.

Also worth fitting a new Gold Sports coil as well if you go down that route as well a decent plug leads.

My car has never missed a beat since.

I have not altered the setup from the standard advance curve it came with I intend to do this when I refit my new engine in the next week or 2 by uploading a new curve, yet to be decided.

AshM, welcome to the forum. I collected my S2 FHC from Edinburgh in 2014.
Lots of useful information on the forum, including having the dizzy overhauled by the Distributor Doctor: http://www.distributordoctor.com/about.html as some feel that's as good as having an electronic system. Though the DD will also fit an electronic system into your dizzy for you.
Enjoy reading the forum, there are good reports on restorations and other work that'll help you with you own work.

Well an S2 FHC 1970, what more can I say apart from what a great choice of car & year !

Lots of great information on here to help with your work on the car, definitely recommend Martin Jay of Distributor Doctor for your dizzy, however there are other very good electronic ignition systems available, having done my research & read the reports I went for Pertronix primarily as I knew I would not use all the different programs on the 123 and aired on the side of caution & reliability but there's a great choice for you.
