I didn't think they would do 80mph.
I remember my grandad had one and he had to take a different route home one day after we'd been fishing because it wouldn't make it up a hill!

I admit to being astonished and horrified in equal measure.
Was interesting to see that they thought that 20,000 miles might break the engines. Also that they seemed to be changing tyres.

None of these were A 30s. These were the later generation of mid 50s Austins which ran from the A40 replacement for the Somerset ( 1200cc) which only lasted a year and morphed into the A50 ( 1489cc) to A90 ( 2639cc) . They were all competent cars, and I think the 80mph one was a flat out A50 .

I remember these back in the 60's.......... an often alternative to a mini for going a bit faster. They were that bit too small for me but the guys I knew that persevered sang their praise

Christopher, the 100E had white metal bearings because it too was side valve. It was the 107E that had a pushrod engine.
My first project was a 110bhp 1640cc Kent engine into a 100E using a 107E engine cross member.
It was a little screamer.

I had a Ford Angela 100E and put a Ford Classic GT engine in it with twin coke webbers. I used the 107E engine mount frame.

Wasn't the 100E side inlet/overhead exhaust or vice-versa? And wasn't it the 105E that was first with the pushrods, not 107E? I had a 105E that had pushrods, and bent valves, and a cracked piston......

The 100E was sidevalve. What I think you are thinking of is that there were several inlet overhead valve conversions going the rounds in the 50s of which IIRC Derrington was the most popular. The 105E and the 107E were the same 997ccengine with the ultrashort short stroke introduced in 1959 . The difference was that the 105E went in the New ( reverse window) Anglia and the 107E went into the conventional 4 door Prefect

The 105E was launched in 1959 and, at the same time, the Prefect was given the tiny Kent engine. The 100E remained in production in basic form and gained the name Popular. A dreadful little car but it was very solidly built. It responded very well to a threefold increase in power.
The hardest part of my project was converting it to electric wipers, which improved it's usability immensely.
