It sold very quickly. I made contact as soon as the magazine came out and was still third in line. The person in front of me bought it. If he hadn't, I would have.

Adam, that's a nice looking 'E'.

A couple of thoughts. It's advertised as a '72, but the S2 had long been discontinued by then....I had a S3 Plus 2 that was made in December 1970! I guess that '72 is when it was first registered, but it may be worth finding out if it's one of the very last S2 cars...could add a bit of interest.

Some late cars were used to 'try out' new bits and pieces for the new model, then they may revert to their standard spec and be sold on. The starting point for the search to see if anything interesting has happened to this car is a Coventry registration number....if it has one get chatting to JDHT. It seems odd that the car wasn't on the road for a full 12 months, maybe more.

Second thought is that it's advertised as a Coupe and it's a Plus 2. Folks looking for a Plus 2 may not even look at the advert.

Good luck with the sale. If it remains quiet on Pistonheads I'd recommend a go on eBay, but described in much more detail. When I put my S3 Plus 2 on eBay I described the car panel by panel. This showed potential buyers exactly what they would be buying, the good, bad and ugly, and that gave them a lot of confidence to bid, or at least come and have a look.

Another odd thing about this car is that it has bolt on wire wheels, which really are rather ugly.

I'm really confused now (only just read this post) I was assured it was a 72 S2. DVLA have its year of manufacture as 72 and I think / thought the serial numbers bear that out. Now you have mentioned this I shall do a little digging, it was exported to the republic of Ireland early on and then re-registered when it got brought back to Blighty.

No takers as yet, but I really don't want to part with it so am not being that pro active. I'm not sure if anyone can decipher these serial numbers but here they are ..plus the matching engine number (now scrap ).

Is there some thing I can check to nail the series of this car ? I think I was told on here early on that it was a S2 too. If its more interestingas a 72 S2 I'd like to know!! :D Cheers

Adam

Try looking here: http://etypeuk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=951 from which you car is a RHD S2 2+2 built between '68 and '70 and closer to the former than latter.

Adam,

from the N? on the pictures, it is certainly a 1970 S2 2+2 RHD.
If the VIN N? is 1R35856 from what I can read you will see on searching on www.xkedata.com that the cars close to this N? also have body N? and gearbox and engine N? that are close / in sequence with the N? from your plate. So it must indeed have been licensed/registered in 1972 to have been indentified so, but it is a 1970 produced car. If you ask a a JDHT certificate , you should get date of production to confirm this.

More on VIN N? guide here : www.xkedata.com/catalog/numbers/

For the JDHT certificate here :www.jdht.com/JDHT/html/Trust/certs/trace_certs.html

best regards

I think that the export / re-import answers the confusion...cars imported in that era didn't get an age-related number, but a number relating to when they were imported. The V5 would probably also have 1972 as year of registration

A heritage certificate from JDHT would give the build date.

It's a very good looking car, and the right colour....should sell.

For those of you who remember my tale of woe regarding the original engine I got with the car in this thread it has now been resolved. That's to say the engineer and I have settled with each other and I have got my original block and internals back. The block was worked on and found to have cracks......... post engineering work........it is now on ebay, along with a newly ground crank and re-centered rods which may be of interest to someone on here.

The blocks on ebay too, but despite the rebore and new liner is I think scrap, though some of the attached casings and oil pump assembly etc may be of interest.

The crank is only +10 (standard thrusts) and done by a Hutson recommended engineer so is a good one. I've put the links on here they're all pretty cheap and full inspection / provenance is available.

Best regards

Adam

Hi Adam

Purely out of interest I note on the ad selling the block the picture showing 3 cylinder holes from above have some small cracks on the shiny metal. Were these cracks regarded as serious? were they regarded as repairable? I'm presuming the major crack you mention that can be metal stitched is on the exterior surface of the block?

Yes, Chris Watson has done all the work, and he is the man! Unfortunately for him and me the block, which was the correct original engine for my 2+2, showed up with cracks...after the engineering work had been carried out. (I suspect when the block was skimmed)Those cracks run longways down the block to the side of the bores.

The other crack is down the side of the block, according to Chris it may have been stitched in the factory and MIGHT (only might) be repairable. The top and bottom of it is he wouldn't guarantee the block despite most of the work having been carried out. I also didn't want to risk the repair with no guarantee. The block might be considered repairable by some, but not by me (or him).

The crank and rods had also been ground/re-centered by the time the cracked block became evident. So there's a lot of good stuff there, but if you want this E-type block (with the work already carried out as per the advert) you had better satisfy yourself that it can be repaired.

I hope this helps. Inspection welcome BTW. Its a real pity, had all this not happened the original engine would have gone back into the car and I wouldn't be trying to cover my engineering cost in this way......worse things do happen.

What I don't understand is why you are selling the crank and rods ? Incidentally the line boring applies to the block, not to these.

Who mentioned line boring? the block was re-bored and a new liner fitted. The rods were re-centered.

The crank and rods came from the block, I was going to rebuild and is all thats left for me to sell. The car went some time ago with the non original engine it came with IYSWIM.

Sorry, I thought that "re-centred" must have meant line bored. What is done to re-centre the rods?

Re-centering/refurbishing con rods is better described in this link than I can at this time of night!

http://www.enginebuildermag.com/Article ... think.aspx

Going to the expense of a reground crank without getting the Rods checked out as above would be a disaster if the rod ends turned out to be ever so slightly oval etc :D
