#1 3.07 ratio diff. crown wheel+pinion in 2025

Post by Philippe-J. » Wed Mar 05, 2025 9:28 am

Having a 67 E from the US, my rear axle ratio is 3.54. According to past threads dealing with ratio change, I thought it would be a simple matter to change it to the more desirable 3.07 (assuming I know a skilled mechanics to do the job)
Alas crown+pinion with the right ratio are no more easy to find. Or they might be of poor quality (and you know it only after few thousands of miles  ).
Is there anyone who can 1/ convince me to keep the 3.54 ratio  , or 2/ indicate a provider with stocks or good quality repros (UK or overseas) :fingerscrossed: ?

Thank you for your help.

A few years ago I did the change from 3.54 to 3.07 on my 1966 FHC. It is the best upgrade to my E-type ever! I bought the pin+crown from SNG Barret and have been very happy with the quality. It is manufactured in the UK by Tran-X who are part of the Quaife group. If they still supply SNG I can recommend you buy it.

Having said that, be aware that it is a very complicated operation which definitely requires that the person doing it knows the skill. It requires a lot of experience and patience to adjust so that you don't end up with a rear end that howls or otherwise has noises. I did the job my self but it was no easy task. You should expect that all bearings, oil seals, limited slip plates etc. also have to be changed. I ended up spending around €3500 just on spare parts. But it has been worth all the money. I have absolutely no noises from the rear end. I have driven about 10,000 km with it and have, among other things, been on a trip from Copenhagen to Florence, Italy.

I noticed that from my previous readings, but his answer is he does no more trade outside UK since brexit  .
That's the reason for this thread: is there any alternative today, such as buying a Dana ring+pinion + other adaptation stuff? Again assuming I can find a skilled mechanics that can deal with all these spares.

It’s a bit late for the retro-classics show (last weekend) but could it be worth looking at the list of exhibitors to find someone on there who could supply parts or rebuild for you?

Philippe, that is a very good option for you. Even if you can’t get to Spares Day there are others from France who get over, maybe they could collect for you?

Philippe, you cannot simply fit a crown and pinion from a 3.07 into a 3.54 casing.
You do need a 3.07 casing which could be coming from a saloon hence without LSD, into which you will fit the LSD out from your 3.54 with the crown and pinion of the 3.07.
Hope this is illustrative and I am sure others will confirm.

You shouldn't have to change the diff casing... never heard of this. Swapping a 3.54 for a 3.07 is done all the time. If you go down to a 2.88 it may require a spacer on the ring gear.

Doug is correct, there is only an issue when trying to fit a 2.88 gear set into a housing than contained lower ratio gear sets.

Hello Andrew,
I've not had a gear set from SNGB in my hands, but I believe there is no Back Lash detail marked on the Crown Wheel.

Bill

Thank you all for your posts.
Who knows about IWE? They have a classified on eBay for a Dana 44 crown+pinion 3.07 for a reasonable price.
Edit: link here: https://www.ebay.fr/itm/155274458768?mk ... name=11051

They are some posts about fitting such a stuff (e.g. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13728&hilit=dana). Is there any prohibitive drawbacks?

I had a different experience : the pinion of the 3.07 had a smaller OD, coming from a saloon without LSD, so I had to swap internals.

Hello Ralf,
Well, of course the Pinion Gear itself will be a different diameter, and it would be a larger diameter for the higher geared 3.07 gear set; therefore, I assume you're referring to the bearing journal diameters of the Pinion Shaft being a smaller diameter. If so, I've never seen that in any of the various gear sets for Salisbury Differentials.

I have Pinion Shafts from 3.07 and 3.54 gear sets to hand and measuring them as I write this. The front and rear bearing journals of each shaft measures 30.42 and 34.95 respectively within a very small tolerance, the same as all other Pinion Shafts for Salisbury differentials.

Regards,

Bill

Hi Bill, you must be right, frankly I don't recall full details, but what I now remember is that I had 3 diff simultaneously opened on the bench: the original 3.54 from my car, a 2.88 and a 3.07 from MK2.
The 3.07 pinion and crown had been a straight swap into the 3.54 casing, but not the 2.88 I had initially opted for. That was 25y back...apologies to all for the confusion :banghead:

Another valuable track for crown wheel and pinion?
I found it in viewtopic.php?f=7&t=13710&p=111696&hili ... ar#p111696. Northern Tool & Gear sell CW&P made for E Types
https://www.ntgear.co.uk/product/e-type-jaguar/,
and prove to be of good will when asked information about their product. On top of this their price is appealing.
Isn't it too much to hope for? First the number of teeth is not the usual one (16/49 vs 14/43). Second I can't find much feedback about them on E Type sites :scratchheadyellow:
Anyone has experienced them? Should I go with it for my ratio swap?

Wish I'd known about this. Before I replaced the 3.54 in my S3 with an S1 3.07 from SNGB. Had to use one different bearing because the SI pinion shaft is smaller diameter. And use shims instead of the crush sleeve.
