3.07 ratio diff. crown wheel+pinion in 2025

Happy end of the story, but not straightforward.

At the end, thanks to Rory's help (I'd better say "action") I received an complete overhauled 3.07 axle shipped by Shiply.
The equation is: Shiply + Rory = no border 3.07 axle

I can now resume the rebuilding of the IRS, what a relief it is !

I had a knocking from my rear end and my mechanic advised I needed a diff rebuild, some new bearings and seals.

I searched on here for suitable companies but all the links I found were from pre-covid posts and none any longer working.

My mechanic suggested I try Simply Performance in Dorking UK and they did the rebuild in a week! Not cheap but they had all necessary parts which included a replacement yoke/rotating cage/carrier (?)

It is all just going back in and will get a good run through the Pyrenees soon.

Hello Jerome,
If they replaced the Output Shaft bearings, it will not have been with the correct bearing. Your car will have a Type 2 Salisbury diff and the correct bearing, one that has the pre-load built in, hasn't been available for many years. The available alternative is a poor replacement, and one that can't be pre-loaded.

Thanks for your concern but I think I'm safe in not having a slippy diff in my back axle - maybe surprisingly as I believe it is the original item. With the back end in the air, if I turn 1 wheel, the other goes the other way round. Is that all I need to know?? Simply Performance is a highly rated company, I believe, so I'd be surprised if they got it wrong.

Wheels in opposite direction means non LSD....what was it befor your rebuild?..you mentioned they replaced the carrier...hope they didnt remove a lsd and fit an open unit?..Steve

Steve, all S2 in the UK were non-lsd I believe

Hi Geoff...there are lot of S2 cars out there with LSD..
Some others don't even know if they have it or not...a lot can change in 50 years....Steve....PS dont forget special orders

Hello Jerome,
Whether it's a LSD diff or not makes no difference to the type of Output Shaft bearing used. If the bearing used in your diff is an double row, angular contact bearing, which is most likely, that bearing has not been available for many years, and the replacement being offered by the After Market brigade is a very poor compromise.

That would be entirely your call. But before I would use the inferior replacement option available for the original Double Row, Angular Contract bearings, I would seek Bearing Housings and Output Shafts from a Series 2 XJ6 and onward, XJ12, or XJS; all of which use opposing, taper roller bearings, and are completely interchangeable as an assembly, without any modification to the diff housing.
