Because the registration documents are for a different car.
There's no way you can prove that you own the car or that it's not stolen.
Andrew.

I did buy the car, but didn't return to the forum to update so sorry about that chaps.
We've just returned from a 1250 mile tour of Scotland and on a final day of our tour we called in to Livingstone to show the car to the, now elderly, gentleman who imported the car from a Californian policeman, stripped and rebuilt the car around 2000 changing it from LHD BRG to RHD red. Both he and his wife were over the moon seeing the car again and looking in such fine fettle.
New tyres, new hoses, new rear discs & pads, new rear suspension mounts, new smaller steering wheel, refurbished speedometer, new fuel tank gasket, a few other minor bits, MOT and an oil & filter change were required.
Jobs to do now include replacing the cracked exhaust manifold, sorting out the window winder mechanisms (both sides very stiff), a clunky auto gearbox moving from P to D once the car is warm (weak rubber mounts / old oil / or something else?) and replacing the clock - time seems to flyby when driving the car, I could never keep track of time.
So far I've done about 2500 miles in the car, including a track day at Blyton Park. Most importantly, my wife likes riding in it (unlike the TR3A).
As for the numbers, the plate from below battery box is clearly wrong. A small plate on the passenger door carries the correct chassis number from the V5. The engine number on the block matches the V5. I haven't been able to access the gearbox number yet nor the body number which i believe may be behind the rear bumper somewhere.
Having fun driving it and looking forward to our next tour.
